DUMB! I own a 575M. No cruise, for 1,000 miles per day. Are you kidding? 55AMG. Is daddy the CEO of EXXON? Please get real.
The rental idea is fine if you can get one-way. Why kill yourself? Toyota Camry will treat you right in a reasonable way, at reasonable cost. If you can afford it and don't care, an E-class Mercedes will give you heavenly comfort at 32mpg. If you're doing 1K miles per day, fun and games isn't in it. the 100mph is for dopes, especially in Ohio. I think if you were wealthy, you would fly. If not, no harm done.
OK, I give up. Was Camry the right answer? Looking for some meaning in (a) life and (b) this thread...
How will an M5 beat you up? And take it easy on the replies, people are trying to give you ideas, quit *****in'.
[/QUOTE] Not really. I did some 1500km (nearly 1000miles) in about 2,5days in a Fiat Seicento (no AC, no... well nothing really, just a 0,9L, 39 HP engine) in the summer and still enjoyed it the whole way. Just depends on the mindset Edit - sorry, missed the "a day" bit
Well i go 800miles +fine on a car that doesn't have cruise control, and that was in a day, actually now that i think about it i did 2500 in about two and a half days, wasn't bad at all. As for the S65, personally its a great car, has the grunt to get you there fast, yes its not as thrilling as a F575 or a SL but it has room, I guess a SL550 would do well, i wouldn't use the 5.5L supercharged engine due to the excessive noise etc. and what the hell with the attack? I'm voicing my opinion. No my father is not the CEO of EXXON... i have no idea where you got that, I own a HVAC company out in MA, its small but i do well...that was uncalled for
how the **** will a basically beefed up 5 series beat you out of house and home? unless yours didn't have shocks or something, my friend owns a E60 M5 and has driven it from Chicago Illinois to Boston MA in about a day and a few hours, no problem, I have no idea what your problem is, unless putting people down makes you pop a chub
My longest one day trip was Las Cruces, NM to Sherman Oaks, CA with one 20min break, 11hrs doorstep to doorstep (10W is horrible past San Bernardino) in '01. If I HAD to drive..I would take the XJR. I need sport seating due to back injury. Most of the cars mentioned would be torture because I couldn't adjust them to be firm enough. You don't realize how much pressure you use for pedal movements, steering, and posture until fatigue sets in. Your muscles fatigue because they are trying to support you where the seating is not. I wouldn't joke about using a "sports car" for a long trip. They are designed to support your body in ways luxury seats can't once you start piling on mileage. What separates the real GTs from the rest of the modes of transportation becomes readily apparant. An Elise would be brutal? A Porsche would be sublime, as would the M5 or QP. The Camry or Civic would be from rest stop to rest stop.
If I had to do that I would drive a Bentley Continental GTC. It is fast, fun, comfortable, has a good navigation system. It fits in to traffic somewhat well compared to cars like Ferrari's, Lambo's, Porsches, etc..., but it still is a capable car, maybe not to the same extent of those cars but it still packs a punch with the W12 engine that lets out 552 horsepower. Also once you get to sunny Cali. I could put the top down. The Ferrari 612 is probably my second choice choice for the drive.
If youre going to blow off thre cops something fast comfor table and fun like a 550 of 456. If its comfort try an a8 or a toyota avalon. OR The best combo of the lot an auto quatroporte pace grace space and comfort.
Obviously you haven't traveled far and fast in a late model 911 turbo. You can cruise all day long at 140+ (assuming you don't get caught), and in relative comfort. Newer turbo's are luxo-rockets, not hard edged sports cars. The stock 996tt came with an overassisted clutch and a disturbingly soft suspension, but was still stupid fast. Plus the AWD and Porsche electronic nannies are second to none in the turbo. It is as safe as "crazy fast" can get. It is an awesome GT car. @Bullfighter - You may be my new hero. lol
I've done 1000 mile days in my 365 2+2, no problem. For that trip, though, I'd pick a 456, or if cars I don't own are an option, a 612. The 456 and 612 (and the 365 2+2, for that matter) are made for trips like that. If you're concerned about budget, it's hard to beat the airlines though.
If I had to do it, I would grab a couple of friends and hop into my wife's 750iL. Excellent agility (for a sled,) absolute comfort, and it soaks up highway like a desiccated sponge. Seats are massively adjustible, supportive semi-buckets with the massage* function. Crank some tunes and the distance simply zones away. A 740iL would get 15% better mileage (23 vs. 20), but I don't happen to have one handy. Cadillac probably has something similar, but with sensory deprivation included, should you prefer less inputs from outside your bubble. *massage function = alternating pressure air chambers like a hospital uses to prevent bed sores. Not a real massage.
I would drive my Daytona. Dan Gurney and Brock Yates managed about 35 hours coast to coast in the original Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Race in a Daytona so I reckon it would work fine for me. Terry
Ill take my Benz, great ride and comfort. Plus if some fool hits me, I'll be able to walk away from the accident.
