599 Spyder

I have seen the threads on the Photoshop California Spyder. Aside from this interesting exercise, what are the odds of a 599 Spyder? I think it has a place in the line up. The 599 has quite a few years left in the model line. There is no need for an end of the line "parts bin clearance special" like to 550 Barchetta or the 575 Super America. I am thinking a bona fide Spyder like the 430 Spyder

The performance target for the 599 was the old F40. That model was never offered as a Spyder. Ferrari management said there would be no 'light-weight' performance version of the 599 and also no plans for a Spyder version. The 599 exists in only one version, from the factory.

Just because the F40 was the performance target, doesn't mean that the two cars have to only be offered in Berlinetta form.

How functional are the butresses? Are they simply an interesting design element, or do they provide necessary aerodynamics? A topless 599 would certainly lose those...

 

I can't remember what the exact numbers were, but the buttresses are functional and provide something like ~25% of the total rear downforce. I'll try to find the exact numbers.

I think you might see the photochromatic roof from the anniversary 612 being used in the 599 at some later stage. There's a lot of design work in that roof to only use it in 60 cars.

We are all well aware that the 599 exists in only one version from the factory. Thank you for that. The F40 is a supercar not a production car and it is to the best of my knowledge the rule that the entire run of a supercar is in one variant with only minor choices on options. Mass production cars like the 599 live by different rules from supercars. The design target of the 599, the F40, was in spirit. The F40 is regarded as the ultimate driver's car and that spirit was intended to be part of the 599's DNA. The performance target is a stupid point: 20 years, electronics, etc. The 599 is over 6 seconds faster at Fiorano as you would expect it to be.

So back to the point: Just as the 430 and the 430 Spyder are a part of the product line, is it even remotely possible that the 599 will have a Spyder version (emphasis not a limited production variant like SA, 550B, glass roof, etc.)? I don't see the downforce from the buttresses as an insurmountable problem. I have had my 599 up to 330kph and there is no doubt that the buttresses are working but the main downforce is from under the car and further refinement can no doubt cover for the loss of the buttresses. The 599 shell could be easily refined to become a production Spyder like the 430/360. Is the demand there for a full production 599 Spyder? I would certainly want one

 

It is a regular production model to be made for at least next 6-7 years,so I don't see any reason why there should be no additional variants like it was the case with 550/575.

 

A 599 spider would really change my mind on the looks I think. I was thinking hardtop convertible but that would really add alot of weight and complicate things.

 

Someone here on F-Chat did a p-chop of a 599 with the Superamerica roof and it actually looked really good. The way the rear roof lines slope back on the 599 makes it flow much better than what they did with the 575 Superamerica that didn't look right at all.

 

I believe the decisions for variants are purely financial. If 599 coupes keep selling briskly, then no spyder will be built. As interest wanes for the 599 (it will), the variants will pop up. In order, I think we'll see an "M" version of the 599, then a sunroof edition and lastly a special edition spyder version. After all that said, I'd still want the standard coupe!

Different yes; but no too different. As you obviously know the 599 is the v12 model of Ferrari not the v8; and v12 models had most of the time (in the past two decades at least) been offered in limited variants. As we saw, topless front engined v12s like the 575 and 550 only came in the limited form of what you described as 'parts bin clearance specials'. Open top rear engined v12s like the boxer/testarossa were even more scarce and I don't think they were even produced officially by Ferrari (correct me if i'm wrong).

To compare the 430 and the 599 is a stupid point. Again, as we had seen from the past two decades, Ferrari's modern approach in offering the v8 models to public iss very different from that of the v12 models. Since the 308s we saw the official production line of the GTS, since the 348 we saw the offers of the Challenge and spider etc. The v12 models were offered in a fashion not even remotely close to that since the 1980s.

So to answer your question, I think it is unlikely that a 599 spyder will be produced in a 'production line' fashion - of course, I would love to have Ferrari prove me wrong.

Your logic is compelling, but, fortunately, incorrect. Ferrari is planning a release of the 599GTS in sometime in the next 24 months or so. And it will not be a soft top! Bank on it.

 

Have heard the same and there are a lot of orders building now.

F is so annoying w their stupid policy of no V12 spyders or silly tops for V12s

Porsche, AM, Lambo, MB, BMW will all sell you a top line spyder, why not F ?

 

None of these makers is making any cars just to make their clients happy,they make them to make money most of all.
Ferrari ,with its artificial limits of production,does not have the need to make its offerings even more attractive.

 

Be patient. 599 Spyder will be killer.
