Just wanted a idea what figure you/they set your labour rate at?

Or do you have a set figure for a certain job?

I bet you it's abit of money, My mate works at a Holden Dealership and he says they charge him out as a mechanic for workshop repairs at a wallet busting $95.00/hr let alone a exotic car repairer like FF I would guess FF charges high $100.00's to $200.00/hr?

When my boss had his shop all his jobs were pre-calculated charge for instance a timing belt on a Toyota, book showed 5 hrs at a full cost of parts and labour say $1500.00, I could roll 3 in a day easy but even though I did them in just over 2 hrs each he would still charge them the pre-charged valve, I guess it pays to have good mechanics working for you sometimes

Last time I heard my brother talking about CAT, Cummins and Komatsu charges I sure the workshop floor was over $120.00/hr and the feild Service boys were atleast $150.00/hr not including travel charges

Buffs is good, try and go there when I can, my brother was there at the Frog & Toad bar the other night for dinner with his family, food was good, service was good too All the reno's are finished now, looks like a couple of million bucks, literally

 

but here's the trick....they might SAY they're charging $110ph, but they charge you for 4 hours work when they really only do 2 hours on your car and rest of the time is spent chatting on the phone to the girlfriend and making coffee..

so in reality it's $220ph...which is a bit rich.

 

would it be possible to just figure out a contracted price that both party is happy with before hand, if it took them less time to do it, good for them; if not, its their problem. I think if someone is as experienced as they say they are, then they won't says "i have no idea how long it would take".

No, what you wrote is correct [and unfair]

Warranty labour is worked out with a set time-sheet schedule, where its unfair is the manufacturer works out the said times in a *lab* with brand new equippment, all nice new nuts and bolts, all clean etc with correct tools.

Say for instance a clutch in a 4x4 takes 3 hours to do, if you did it under warranty you would get back 3 hours labour [at a silly reduced lower labour rate anyway] what the manufacturer does not see is the said 4x4 is covered in mud, all the bolts are rusted and snapped & rounded off etc and it takes 4.5 hours, so u just lost 1.5 hours of payment, they dont want to know about it.They also dont pay for *finding* faults.

Warranty is the worst pox lowest payment on the planet, the Japanese are the worst and the Americans pay best.No escape you sold the vehicle you take it up the arse/ass and take a $$ hit.

Back to Ferrari, if FF had to do say, new discs and pads on a Ferrari, he would know pretty close to the time it would take to do the said job, so he would be able to quote prior to *most* repairs, but to be fair not all

My retail rate is now $99/hr including GST. (90 plus)

And contrary to what Pless or anyone else might say... I categorically DO NOT charge for any more than I work.

I don't claim to be 100% efficient, and typically I charge between 60 and 90% of the actual time I spend doing something.

Most days, I might work 8 hours, yet sell only 6 of them, and on far too many occassions I can go home having sold only 2 or 3 hours in a day.

My costs are structured around my overheads, which are relatively low compared to some. I make an honest and fair living.

Further, I offer generous discounts on my labour the bigger the job. For restoration work (or any job over 100 hours) I charge $70/hr... and this is proably charged at on average about 80% efficiency.... eg I might charge you 100 hours at 70/hr=$7k, but I've spent 120 that I could have been earning $90/hr for= $10,800.

If someone hires me for racing or any whole day activity I charge $450 plus GST for the day. I can make much more if I stay in the shop and sell my labour and some parts... but I work to live... not live to work.. I love my job and I make sacrifices to do paid work I enjoy.

I know damn well I'll never make millions from my hands... so whether I make a fair living at my current relaxed rate, or a little bit better living at a "greedy" rate... whats the point...

Further, due to the transparency and availability of parts worldwide, I sell most of my parts at my cost plus 10% (extreme cases either way are adjusted of course)... and you are welcome to supply your own parts if this is not agreeable.

I sleep with a clear conscience.


I don't do quotes, I sometimes do estimates. But I work on trust.

I also let most customers (certainly repeat customers) take their car without paying and trust them to pay me when they can.

This HAS bitten me on the arse too many times, but overall most people appreciate the personal and friendly relaxed way I do my business.

Those poor Ferrari owners struggling to afford servicing, I feel for them

 

The irony is that, due to the small community of owners, you have less chance of being ripped off by a Ferrari repairer than you do many modern cars.

My Benz recently needed a new alternator. $2K the (dealer) service guy quoted. I got one from Bosch for $475 and had it couriered over to them. Not so much as a hint of embarassment when I collected the car.

I don't take credit cards, it's my choice, but I sacrifice cash flow to minimise overheads.

I begrudge paying the card companies their %. I feel a capped transaction fee is more fair, yet no-one will offer it.

 

I have often wondered about this.There must be a lot of owners who could pay easily but there must also be some who are true F-lovers who are similar to addicted gamblers etc and cannot pay but eventually do because they are hooked.

there was also a bit of BS in there...but i think we all know, by now, what's going on in Phil's head.

 

I did say "less chance", not "no chance".

I'm too smart to get ripped off too. That's why when I pulled my motor down, I found a cam cap without a nut and washer on it and then the bits lying in the sump. The guy who did the valve clearance check when I landed the car obviously forgot to tighten one cap nut, or he dropped the nut inside the head and decided to say nothing.

The mechanic I use now is a goose, but he's cheap and works long hours....

for the record... count up your consumables bill too...

laundry (overalls, gloves, shoes etc), spray cans of stuff, masking and paint prep materials, sealants, fasteners, waste disposal, etc etc etc
