Hi there,am looking at a 1987 328 which lived in Hong Kong for the first 14 years of its life.Now in the UK. My question is whether the climate in Hong Kong is likely to have been good or bad for the car? Would apreciate any opinions.
If stored indoors then no problem. If left out in the open then big problems. HK has subtropic weather: very hot and very very humid. Since it's a Ferrari chances are it was well taken care of.
I don't think you need to worry about the climate. Most cars in Hong Kong are kept indoors. Ferrari's are hardly ever seen parked on the streets. If the 328 you're talking about is white, I may have seen it parked in a covered parking lot in Wan Chai.
I recently relocated from San Francisco area to Hong Kong.....I live up on Plantation Road on the Peak.....The apartment I live looks directly towards a small row of houses.....I see parked out front a nice 348 (under car port) and 456 (totally outside) and a brand new Bently (under carport).....all parked outside and in the humid elements of Hong Kong...blows my mind to see such beauty parked in the rough elements of Hong Kong weather.....no indooor climate controlled garage
Cars that live on the Peak are to be avoided. You will understand why after you have lived through a summer on the Peak
Yes I am very familiar with the Peak....Fog----Fog----and More----Fog. Actually I would avoid buying any Ferrari in Hong Kong unless it could be proven it had been well taken care of....It is very humid and wet here which can not be good for the cars....I imagine it makes it that much more difficult to purchase a high end exotic in HK......
Pop the bonnet and look closely at the zinc chromate plated hardware on the fuel lines. If they are corroded and looking very white spotted and not golden anymore, chances are it was one of those that stayed parked outside. Alluminum is also a dead giveaway. It to will have/show it's "Oxide" corrossion. Cheers!
