Dino was a 100 pointer, I don't know what kind of engine service was done on it but Gene had a full time mechanic on staff who is old school A++

The body was nearly perfect as i remember... I am pretty sure it was in the TDM article i did like 3 years ago about the collection...

Not to Ferrari concours 100 points, too many customizations and non-original touches. The 330 GTS was like this too. I think all minor things that could easily be corrected for the FCA Nationals and Cavallino crowd. You have to give Gene credit for not giving a flip about originality and what concours judges might think, he did with his cars what HE wanted to do. I respect that, he must be Texan.

Just ball-parking, but it looks like $11M+ on the cars and bikes alone. Wow.

Just got word from my friend that stayed at Ponder's, that Shelby bought the boat tailed Rolls Royce. The RM owner came up to he and Ponder on saturday with a crumpled up piece of paper with a lot of numbers on it. It was his guess on the total sale, and it ended up being within $50k of the total, and he was on the low side. Gene was happy with the results. Now let's sit back and see what he buys next.

I think it was about $3500 (+15%); well over the estimate, and my threshold.
    Although it was very nice!

The story on the place setting is; Gene and Harry were eating at Ristorante Cavallino with their wives on a trip where they watched the current Mille Miglia a few years back. Gene wanted to buy the whole place setting, tablecloth and all. The manager informed him that they were not for sale. After some additional discussion a deal was struck, and they shipped it back to Marshall for him, proving everything has it's price.

On a side note, they found an sign for the event that said official on it. They placed it on the dash of their 15 passenger van, and as they would drive up to the next stop in the race, they would point to the sign and shout in their best Texitalia, "official, official". They would then be waved in to the local square or Piazza, and would park amongst the other "official' cars putting on the race.

[dreaming] $11 M. Wow, that could buy 2-3 Ferraris I want. :) I would rather have a TR, LM, TdF, and 275 vs. just one GTO. [/dreaming]

Hey, was Jay Leno there? That's the rumor going around Marshall from the common folk (duck hunter friends).

Jay told me he rarely will attend an auction because of the distraction and the people who think he is bidding on EVERYTHING If he bought anything it was via proxy

Now Shel and Sir Moss will be at Houston for the Keels show

Were they passing out small samples of "crack" too?
$121,000 for a 1999 355 Spider? Someone was high on something.

There is a problem with that Dino. It was advertised as all original with 4,000 or so miles on it.
The Dino registry would lead you to believe a completly different story.
Read the post in the 246 section about fraud on this car.

Been to Marshall 3 times to see his stuff, so passing on another droning auction.

Gene has done so much for the community and friends there, and my connection to him now lives in a cottage on site with his wife. Gene's wife passed a while back, and says he doesn't have anyone with interest enough to pass them along to. Knowing him, he will always be on the look for something rare and fun.

When he had a Malibu house near Cher, he had a large crane place an old Bugati into a courtyard of the house.

I like looking at the memorabilia almost as much as the cars.

I had the auction streaming in the background Thursday and Friday. The majority of items have far exceeded auction estimates. Stellar collection.

I watched probably half the auction and threw caution to the wind to buy some artwork for my garage. The bidding was frantic, reckless and irrational. People do no due diligence as to the value of some items. For instance, a Ferrari gas globe sold for over $3K. Yet the same item is available on the internets for $185. Many of the items were just junk with zero historical/collector value and less than zero provenance.

The Monaco Pit Crew sign that went for $50K was astounding. But I would say all of the memorabilia that was sold was at least 2x the value expected.
