240sx is the way to go. Handles awesome. Cheap to maintain. Lots of aftermarket parts. Cheaper and easier to swap in an SR20DET. A very fun car.
Reliabilty might be an issue if it hasn't been maintained, but an Alfa Romeo GTV6 will get you all the right Italian noises & is a blast to drive.
I was just wondering why no one suggested an Alfa yet... Go with an Alfa - many different examples can be had for < $5K, they're fun to drive, and they turn heads.
Cool to hear SAAB mentioned. How about the 9000 Aero then? A recent Sports and Exotic Car mag covered it.
If you want something different, look at a Corrado. Stay away from the G60 models though. A good VR6 is in your price range. Mine: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v191/DubaiVol/LeftFront.jpg
1987-1991 bmw 325i 325e, or 325is, chassis is the e30, you absolutly cannot go wrong with this car, comes in two door, or four door, the is has a limited slip differential, and lots of good examples in that price and manual transmissions galore .
Take a look at Honda Preludes (1986ish) they are great cars to own if you are cheap and need to get around. Other than replacing the clutch, I only really had to change the fluids in the car. The engine will easily reach 400,000km with proper care. Stay away from BMW as you will break the bank with parts/maintenance.
hey Zups, i think you perfectly outlined the 2-out-of-3 requirement for anything. i know you're young, but get used to the following addition to your thread-title statement as it will be the focus of the majority of your commercial existence... Cheap, good, fast. Any two.
+1 on the corrado. I had one a few years back and they are fun to drive. I wouldnt say stay away from the g-60, if you find a good one they are money, but they are hard to find.
i'm getting old now, (i'm 30) and i (and many like my) are getting a hankering for the 240Z. that is one of the very few jap cars that got the styling absolutely right. if you can get one in good condition, it will be a great car. the rest of the thread from what i've seen.... MX5, get this if you're only concerned about how dam good the thing is to drive, because you'll look like a homosexual in it. otherwise, awesome car. X1/9, slow as a Tennessee sister from the lights but savagely fast around corners, will give you many awesome stories and also many despair filled stories to tell grandkids. 944, haven't dealt with personally, looks alright, very heavy though, not sure if i'd call it a sports car. Saab... no, stop there... MR2, Jap wanna-be X1/9, but also a very good car, it will likely go faster and longer than the X despite being uglier. the X will always look and sound better, but the MR2 will serve you better if it's just a car you're after.
Toyota MR2 N/A - but then I would say that, because I have owned mine for 7 years and still enjoy it's mid-engine set-up and RWD. Most countries have an MR2 Club too.
Don't want to contribute to the delinquency of anybody but the 240sx is what the Drifters use. That's gotta tell you something http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9U5nJbKZt0
Drop a B16 swap into your CRX for 2K and you have a quick little car, that will outhandle most Ferrari's.
MR2s are great cars. For your price range you can get a nice NA and good aftermarket springs/shocks/swaybars, along with with good tires. All said and done you could out turn most cars, Ferraris included.
