It seems I need to top up my oil a tad before my next oil change. Any recommendations for an 89 TR? I understand the Agip 10w40 is not available anymore.

I have used Castrol TWS 10w-60 in all my Ferrari's since 2000 and have been well pleased. You can get it on-line or a any BMW dealer.

Sorry for the late reply. I checked the specs on my oil: it's Kendall GT-1
4P 20W-50. You can also call Patrick Otis in Berkeley, CA. He restores and maintains every kind of Ferrari. He has been very good to my car.

I had the same issue, but got Castrol 10w40. When I checked with FofCF they recommended Mobil 1 if AGIP was not available.

ps - my 86TR seems to consume a lot of oil ... but no visible leaks. Is that typical of the older 12 cyl fcars?

I noticed something interesting with mine, for what its worth. When I first bought my car, I always tried to keep the oil level at the max mark on the stick (checked right after running, car off - as per everyones recommendation). Seemed I had to add a quart here and there...

Then I started to let the oil level run closer to the "Min" mark on the dipstick, and I check after every drive. I haven't had to add oil in a couple thousand miles. Go figure...

    Just one datapoint...

All boxer configurations burn oil, even new. My 85 Carrera burned a quart every 1000 miles right from the factory, and never changed up to about 115,000 miles. That's why women and boxer engines don't mix, they forget to check the oil and burn up the engine....sad but true. No leaks, no problem, you will prob never wear out the engine in this lifetime. Just my 2c. ;)

Rob, I went full synth with Mobil1 15-50 and it doesnt burn a drop through the driving season. Roughly 1,500-2,000 kms. When i used Full Synth Agip it would burn 2 liters per season like clock work. THey dont make the 15-50 anymore so i went 10-40 this year

I was told that synthetic was a smaller molecule and therefore would leak more. Since mine leaks about a drop per day with regular oil.

    Is this other people's experience?

    Dear Ferraristi,

I use Mobil 1 syn. 15w 50 also. No leaks, no issues and no drop in oil level. Oil temps never get up there even in the hot Florida summers. My 91 TR is a daily driver with 40k on the clock now.

But...since someone compared a TR to a woman, I agree, there's always something else to deal with . :)

That's what I used in my '91 TR for 20k miles from March '03 until October '05 (when I sold it). Never leaked any oil. Usually burned about 1/2 a quart every 1k miles.
