I must admit. Since my beloved Rosanna Rosannadana passed away, I haven't had the heart to watch. Heavy sigh of remorse.

Here is the sad reality of life now:

If you can BS well, you can get away with anything. Hell, 99% of employers probably don't check any credentials. ZILCH. NADA.

If you are a kid applying for college, you could claim just about anything. The only thing schools check are GPA/transcripts. You could mention that you were a top HS football player, chess master, head golf pro, and a blackbelt. You would likely get away with it.

    Thats the reality of.

I have learned this from being a landlord. I actually verify EACH piece of info on a tenant. Their employer, income, home address, drivers license, etc. 80% of the stuff on applications is bull, and 99% of folks don't check...

We live in a society where folks can pretend to be doctors and practice for years with no formal training...and no one catches on?!

Faking a couple college degrees is cake. Hell, faking transcripts nowadays is cake. Photoshop, color printers, etc...

I suspect that this is hardly an isolated event.

Good thing that MIT caught this early...just imagine what chaos she could have caused had she been the admissions dean for the 29th year. :)

And aside from the application fee, there's almost no risk for the applicant. A student who otherwise stood a poor chance of getting into a top school really has nothing to lose by putting together a bogus story and hoping to slide through the cracks. If he/she gets caught and dinged, no big deal because he/she wouldn't have likely gotten in otherwise.

I'm going to disagree somewhat with your last sentence. If the truth will set you free. A lie will shackle you. Your integrity is one of the few things no one can take from you. It is the attribute for which you will be known for the rest of your life. But, you knew I'd say something prosaic like that.

    I agree...

I understand having to fire her for lying...had to be done.

...but lets not discount the fact that she appeared to be very good at her job for 28 YEARS!

At the end of the day its probably the students who will lose out because she seemed to be a good influence.

I should disclose that I lied about my credentials when I was very young to 'get in the door'... I then became top of my field.

Looking back, I can't even believed that I left out the whole integrity part of the issue. You are exactly right, admission to any college is hardly worth a person's integrity.

Once you are a proven, and I mean, proven, liar. You have no privacy; and, no trust. "respected?" You're right. So much for ethics.

I believe that is grounds for me to challenge my declined admission from a few years back.
