Ok - I'm having issues with my 430, and I know the following will likely be an incendiary conversation. I've had my 430 for 9 months. I can't figure out where to drive it: 1) I can't drive it to work (too showy), 2) I can't run errands in it (too paranoid about getting hit), 3) it's too noisy for long drives, and 4) track days are few and far between. I have 611 miles on it - the occasional Sunday morning runs to the beach are great, but there aren't enough of them.

I'm considering selling it, and replacing it with a GT3RS. My contention is that to most people it will look like just another Porsche, and hence I'll be more comfortable driving it more often.

I know a few people on FerrariChat have both - love to get some *informed* perspectives. Please spare me the invective about how "stupid" I am to consider selling a Ferrari.

    thx

Well... not that I have experience with either car... but I feel a GT3 RS is basically a race setup car with a radio.
For your #1, with the unique paint job that says GT3 RS is huge letters across the side of your body... I think that this car will also be very showy.
For your #2, since a GT3 RS isn't chump change and it is a limited production run... I'd be cautious of taking that car on errands too.
As for #3, from what I've read on magazines, the car is actually very civil on long drives. Read European Car magazine May 2007 issue, pg. 58 and there's a decent review on the car. If you can't find it, I could probably scan it for you.

But just my opinion on the situation, both the F430 and the 997 GT3 RS are amazing cars whether you keep the F430 or switch to the RS, they are what they are... supercars. You'll still end up with the same issues you mentioned.

Both (1) and (2) are psychological issues, no fault of the car.

When I got my first Ferrari in '02 I suffered greatly from this affliction. There is hope, and it is curable. You have to say to yourself "It's just a car" -- rockchips can be painted, door-dings can be repaired, and if it's too showy for some, well that's their problem. Drive the snot out of it, whenever and whereever you feel like it. Sure, it's a pain to repair stuff -- that's life.
The GT3 is a great car, and if it thrills you as much as the F430, then it's a no-brainer, but I would personally recommend making your choice by the size of your smile in either car. Life's too short to go through it being paranoid. I'll drive mine to work, park it in the Costco parking lot, and anything else a "car" is supposed to do. I'll, <gasp>, even drive it in the rain if I feel like it.

Good luck with whatever route you choose :)

I couldn't agree with BritBlaster more! It seems like the real issues you have with the car relate to numbers 1 and 2 as I don't thing the others are day-to-day occurances. I think if you keep things in perspective and keep telling yourself it's just a car, a lot of your anxiety about driving it to work and on errands will be alleviated. As long as you stay humble and you're not running around the office with your Ferrari hat on and parking it right outside the entrance, people will soon get over it and focus on other things that are much more important! I also agree with gmhl10, the rear wing and some of the color combos on the GT3 RS are far from subtle--I'm not sure if you'll be completely stealth rolling into work!
Good luck to you on whatever you chose--great problem to have!

I know it is heresy on this forum, but have you considered a Z06 in a dark color? Cheaper, much less "visibility" especially in a dark color and still lots of performance as well as inexpensive service.

Having first hand knowledge of both the 430 and a GT3 I think you're trading one set of problems for another. The GT3 is also finicky. Scraping the front and low clearance, plus the fact that it's a track car for the street. Previously I had a 997S and it was far more practical. The RS is almost equally a show stopper for people compared to the 430. I find my driving is purely car specific i.e. to weekly car show or to meet with friends and the odd organized drive here and there. Fortunately I've got another daily car that blends in and attracts almost zero attention. It's all based on your needs but IMO the two you mention are PIA cars(yet totally worth it ;) ) unless you plan to be very selective in your driving.

the gt3 is not the porsche for someone who finds 430 too flashy or impractical. turbo is the way to go.

my friend just got a 997tt with a full leather/carbon interior and it is surprisingly nice. rediculously fast, all weather, tall suspension, and no one will notice you especially if you get a darker color.

i would add a tubi and some hre's and perfect everyday supercar.

another option is amg car especially in silver. completely over the top motor and under the radar looks.

You say what I think all the time. I too find it difficult to just drive around town and park my 430 anywhere.

I decided to use other cars for daily drivers. One of which is a Z-06 which is faster than the 430 and costs 1/4 of the price of a 430. Best

Here's my take on your Ferrari issues.
    1. Work. I assume you are the boss or else you are doing quite well to have a 430. If so, why is it showy to go to work in the car you earned? I drive to work in anything the mood dictates and my guys see it as a motivational tool to get there as well.
    2. Errands. It really is just a car, insured I assume, and you should use it everywhere you can. Park it in spaces that give the guy next to you room to open his dooor and otherwise get in, start it up and drive it.
    3. Noise and long drives. You are not serious about this one are you? Do you have hyper hearing disorder? The 430, driven normally at 2500rpm is no noisier than a Porsche of any stripe. This one is simply BS IMO.
    4. Track day. If you like tracking your car, there is no shortage of car clubs that run track events in every major city in the US almost every week of the year. If you really want to track the car, you can. You obviously live close to the beach, so use the car every chance you can get.

If you still have issues, then keep the 430 and a get a nice three year old BMW 3 series for everyday commuting and drive the 430 every chance you can get that doesn't give you anxiety. Oh, last thing - get yourself a prescription for some Prozac. You're way too tense :)

I'll do a even trade with you for my incoming GT3RS for your 430. My goodness I'm a nice guy! :D I drive my CS pretty much everywhere, to work, to the supermarket, to the mall, and on the weekends. Having just seen Yin's GT3RS, I think it's a lot more showy than a CS or a 430.

If you want a stealth Porsche, I'd consider a 997GT3 or a 997TT in black or silver, a GT3RS is not very stealthy.

Beyond that, I really don't see a 430 as that different from any other nice car. If you're going to get anxious over a 430, I don't see why you wouldn't get anxious over any other nice car. They're all liable to attention from interested onlookers or dings/scratches from the clueless or careless.

I have some of the same issues. I've put 2500 miles on my 430 in less than 1 year, but find its less going somewhere type driving and more go for a drive.
Will have tracked it 2x by end of this month. Only have time for 2 or 3 track days a year. I own a 993 and love driving it most anywhere. GT3 is coming.
I may sell the 430. Too many cars, plus I think I may drive the
GT3 more often. I will wait and see before selling the 430.
My guess is that my smile will be just as big in either car.
I think with the RS your asking for the same issues as with the 430.
    Go with a GT3, Z06 or 997C4S.
PS- your #3 reason is just more of 1 & 2

Adam and other owners like him SHOULD drive theirs cars as little as possible. This way there will be more pristine used Ferraris on the market to choose from!

EVO magazine reported they got 30mpg with the RS. Try doing that in your 430.

good point, but for most of the people on this web site who own or are considering buying exotic ferraris, lambos and porsches, gas mileage on their weekend toys is not a primary consideration!!!!!!!!

A GT3 RS is anything but low profile - bright colours and a lot of bright coloured scaffolding where the passenger seats should be. It is very rare and draws a lot of attention. Noise is not an issue at normal speeds but I think the same for the 430. The suspension is fantastic. All of the posters who write with such conviction - track car for the road - simple question do you own one and drive it on the road? I do. I completely agree with Richard Hammond that the 997 GT3 RS with PASM is a completely different animal from the 996 GT3 RS (which was a track car for the road). As to the 430, it is a road car full stop and should not even be compared with the RS. 430LP to 997 GT3 RS is comparable as was 360CS to 996 GT3 RS. I would dump a 430 in a heart beat for a 997 GT3 RS. I am planning to keep my RS for a very long-time but I will also get a 430 LP

Oh man, it didnt melt?!?! :)

Doesnt the GT3 RS have the roll cage in it? so there would be a hassle of jumping over that to get in the car. Other then that, the GT3 RS is a really nice car, what ever you choose you have to be in love with it. Dont pick one because it is the better car at doing one thing. Pick the car, because it gives you a good feeling when you look at it, or drive it.
