Im sure this must have been coverd before, so im sorry if your tired of these threads.. So im on the hunt for 348, already looked at one, and im going to have a look on to others anytime soon. My first mod will be the Exhuast, if the car has stock exhaust on purchase. So what what Exhuast will give me the most "Ferrari Scream", "F1 car" noise. I dont have to pass any emmsion with the car, and I like it LOUD! Sofar I have found X-ost and Tubi exhausts for the 348, but have no idea if they sound alike. Or if I should go with different setup. I can also go with test pipes if that adds to the "scream" hope you guys will share your knowledge about 348 exhuast options. regards Lars
Since emmision is of no concern here and you want LOUD, then I think you'd want to go with test pipes coupled with either X-OST or Tubi. Many here are happy with X-OST but Tubi has its own followers for years. Only way to decide is to hear both IN PERSON. But from what I hear (in person and on-line) X-OST is pretty sweet with its even sweeter price. But I'm a 355 guy and what do I know about 348's...right? Hope other 348 owners would chime in soon. edit: I, too, was looking for that "F1" scream for my 355. I end up with Hyperflows (need to deal with CA smog here) and Capristo. Very happy & satisfied with end result. Not sure if Capristo has one for 348...??
Hyperflows and Capristo....................... there is no substitute http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_zDvsNVjVI Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you want LOUD and don't care about emissions, then you want test pipes plus the OEM Challenge race exhaust.
I've heard the youtube clips of both the x-ost and tubi. While they appear to be an improvement over the OEM exhaust, it's not exactly the F1 scream that I'm looking for. More of a bassy rumble though it does go up an octave or two at higher revs. Now, a Capristo on an F355 sounds da "bomb"! I don't how much is due to the exhaust vs. the 5 valve per cylinder configuration. I have yet to hear a Capristo on a 348, especially the new design that doesn't hang below the bumper like the old design. If there's someone out there that has a 348 with a Capristo, either the old or new design, could you please post the audio track on youtube or somewhere? TIA Rezal
I have noticed that too, browing thru youtube. The capristo on a 355 sounds amazing, wonder if the sound would be similar on a 348.
On a 348 Tubi De-Cat/Sport cats coupled with BMC CDA air filters should give you the best sound. 355 definitely a L3 Cappy.
I'm having the new Capristo Twin Sound (switchable valves) fitted to my 348 GT Competizione this week, I'll try and make a video when it's done. Basically it's a L1 cap valve closed, valves open it's straight pipes... Should be interesting!! PS you won't get that scream on a 348, that's the 5 valve config.
Lars, you might also want to look at the Kreissieg system. MVPEurosports sells it and they are a sponsor here. Take a look at these videos. It's loud.
I fear that the word "best" here is used too freely as it is subjective. What's best to one person, isn't to the other. The F1 sound is as descriptive as one can get, and even that is subject to what is exactly an F1 sound. IIRC, there's thread around here somewhere that lists difference exhaust sounds. Unfortunately, many of them are non-348s. It would be great if we could get a central depository website (the348.com perhaps?) where any prospective buyer can listen in and determine what is "best." IMHO, exhaust manufacturers, or at least their vendors, should be encouraged to post their own clips here. Other exhaust systems are bought with less regard to the whether their sound like flatulence or someone throwing up. Part of the Ferrari ownership, however, is enjoying the engine noise so choosing the right exhaust it almost as important as choosing the right car. Someone else mentioned that an exhaust is not unlike a wind musical instrument. Even though the high pitch scream may be more due to the 5-valve configuration, wouldn't it be possible for an exhaust manufacturer to design that in, just like a trumpeter would try to blow a high octave note?
Looking forward to it. Do you have cats on your GTC? I would prefer to keep my cats even though legally I can get away with straight pipes (I'm a "greenie" who drives a Ferrari - and no, I have no idea what my carbon footprint is). Is valve adjusted via remote control or preset at a certain rev level?
355 has 3 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. 348 also has 2 exhaust valves per cylinder, yes?!
I don't have the standard cats, I have 100 cel X-Ost Sport Cats. As close as you can get to straight pipes and still be legal. Made no difference to sound with the stock Spider type exhaust. No doubt - well thats all I can put the shriek down to, not sure what else could contribute to that noise - ? BTW I'd like to add that a number of 355's don't sound any better than a Tubi de-cat 348 IMO, just when you go to a L3 Cappy thats untouchable.. Valve is a switch pure and simple, switch it on and you have full open exhaust all the way from idle to max rpm. It's not vacumn operated or rev operated, just a switch!
BTW there was a thread on here a while back when a lot of us in the UK had an exhaust "sound off". Thats where we "decided" that the 348 tubi decat+CDA was the "best" sound. To be honest there was very, very little in it. X-Ost - Gutteral, bassy sound Tubi - Tuned, higher pitched scream (not shriek) Tubi + CDS - Still Tubi sound but louder and deeper towards X-Ost Quicksilver - Metallic, Gutteral "ear bleed" type sound. Out of the lot, the X-Ost up close sounded the loudest to me, but numbers proved the Tubi de-cat + CDA air filter was actually the loudest. I think a number of concluded this was the best sound but it was only by a very, very small margin, all of them sounded great!! As for build quality, I think it's in this order - Capristo, Tubi, Quicksilver/X-Ost. Never seen a Kreisseig.
It has a valve in it that controls the exhaust path. Closed goes thru the cats and muffler, open is straight pipes. Image Unavailable, Please Login

Ones we have seen here in the UK don't match up to the Tubi's, there seems to be a problem particularly with the fit of the tailpipes in the bumper openings. Could just be a bad batch who knows.
Thankfully since I just bought my 348 a few months ago I can not afford a new exhaust system until fall or even next spring. But I did buy the wheel spacers! Until then I'll listen to these discussions and if I am really lucky I'll get to see a 348 with an aftermarket exhaust and hear first hand how it sounds. I may want the Tubi as some say it has more of a high pitched sound. My requirements would be that it is not visible from the rear and the tips fit in the cut outs correctly. Beyond that it is the sound differences that I would like to hear. That may never happen. I may just have to buy one and hope for the best. From what I have seen and heard I will probably leave the stock cats in. . Rodney Dickman 1990 348 TS
wow 285 i gotta say your 355 sound awesome. never heard x-ost prior to that and it sounds great and btw heres a clip of the kreis sieg exhaust http://www.kreissieg-usa.com/video.php?video=355_8-28-355-8300.mpg&desc=F-1%20Mode%20-%20Road%20Test%20(Super%20Sound!)
