And a few more from various tracks but all raced at "the Valley" at one time or another 1. AMX that eventually ran mid 7's at 190 mph. Hairy ride for sure.... 2. Big John Mazmanian 1966 Barracuda Funny Car. He ran a 41 Willys coupe A/GS before this car. 3. Flying Dutchman, Al Vanderwoude. Car was a rolling Mickey Thompson catalog ad. Any piece on the car that could carry a M/T logo on it had one........... 4. "Big Mike" Burkharts first attempt at a funny car. It did surprisingly well. Strange looking, red on one side and blue on the other...... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Found this on Tharp.. Hmm, it is not linking. I will try again. It is the article on him being chosen as one of the top 50 NHRA drivers of all time. He is now an auto broker in Dallas...
And some more. 1. Dick Harrell of Hobbs, New Mexico 2. Dick Loehr. Ford engineer who later switched to Pro Stock3 3. Paula Murphy at Penwell Dragstrip, Odessa, Texas 4. Phil Bonner at Green Valley in 1965 Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

Found this old photo of Tommy McNeely. His 427 Falcon put on some great accidental wheelies. Mistake. Duh.....how did I do this????????
WOW! great thread!! have only gotten half way down, but just wanted to say thanks for putting all this history up, really really cool
Thanks for the info James. 'Big John' at OC, excellent. Do you have any pictures of the Beebe & Mulligan green T/F dragster? Great pics of the early funny cars. From the pictures you can tell how they earned the name 'Funny Car'. Jungle Jim was another great driver with his Chevy Nova f/c. 'Pam' put on a pretty good show to! CH
Beebe and Mulligan. Great team, tragic end. Jungle Pam could really put her best side forward...........;>) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

James you are my 'hero' here! Great to see the Beebe & Mulligan fueler again. Indy was not lucky for that team. You know what they say about green race cars... Jungle Jim and Richard Tharp together in the shot is a great find. Jim had a brother who is still around today in PA. Don't remember seeing the twin engine fueler. In 1968 there was a 32 car show featuring funny cars at St Thomas dragway. 'TV' Tommy Ivo was there with his fueler. He had a glass windowed trailer with a 1968 red Corvette coupe tow car parked behind the race car. The fact that a 'Swamp Rat' blew up resulting in Garlits getting injured changed the history of drag racing. The Don Garlits 1971 rear engined top fuel car at the Winternationals started a revolution still with us today. Too bad they dropped the fire burnouts though. 'Wild Willie ' Borsch could drive that AA/FA sideways with his arm hanging out the door through the flames! CH

Great shots again! I think that was the run that put Garlits in the hospital. While there he got the idea it would perhaps be better to have the motor behind him. So when parts exited the motor or the clutch blew up he wasn't driving into the shrapnel.... CH
Correct. The flywheel exiting the case cut off almost half of one of his feet. It also cut the car in half. The first picture shows the car at the point of explosion and the second was taken in the pits looking at the front end of the car.....
