I am just about to purchased PS CS3 Extended but wanted to know about other programs people are using along with PS. I am buying it through www.creationengine.com and they have something called PS Lightroom. I have never heard of this and wanted to see if anyone has ever heard of it or used it. This is what is says:

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software is the professional photographer's essential toolbox, providing one easy application for managing, adjusting, and presenting large volumes of digital photographs so you can spend less time in front of the computer and more time behind the lens.

    Why Lightroom?
Perform nondestructive editing - Enjoy robust support for more than 150 camera raw formats, and experiment with confidence. Adjustments you make to images in Lightroom won't alter the original data, whether you're working on a JPEG, TIFF, DNG, or camera raw file.

Enjoy an elegant, uncluttered interface - Ease the learning curve and be productive quickly. Task-oriented modules whisk you through typical workflow tasks by putting just the tools you need at your fingertips.

Professional editing tools - Fine-tune your photographs with precise, easy-to-use tools for globally correcting white balance, exposure, tone curves, lens distortion, and color casts.

What do you know about it? And is PS CS4 coming out soon?

Download the 30 day free trial version from Adobe.

    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

I downloaded it and messed with it a little, I don't really see it's purpose as I'm not a professional photographer. Pretty much anything I need to do can be accomplished with Photoshop or Corel Photo-Paint.

CS3 just came out a few weeks ago. So... CS4 will be out in a year and a half to two years. Not even in alpha yet.

If you don't want to spend the money on Photoshop try The Gimp
    http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net for Windows
    http://www.gimp.org for Mac / others
it's free and it has 95% of the features that Photoshop has. The menu setup and things are a little different though.

If the only thing you need is light retouching, you can also try Google Picasa ... it sounds like the same thing as Lightroom, you can adjust coloring, sharpness, lighting, etc. easily without losing your original picture data
    http://picasa.google.com/

edit: I just installed the trial Lightroom. It's the same thing as Picasa, Picasa is a little easier to navigate but Lightroom has more features that a professional photographer would use. so it all depends on your needs

Just got Gimp installed on my new laptop (17" MacBook Pro) and so far it looks like a decent alternative to Photoshop. I had an older Windows version of Photoshop on my previous laptop but since it would be a relatively expensive upgrade and Adobe is rather hardcore about their licensing restrictions I'm giving Gimp a try.
