I just got a phone call from a buddy of mine who said he saw what he thought was a yellow 360 spider in our neck of the woods.
He mentioned that there werent any badges on the rear, so he wasn't sure if it was a 360 or a 430. I then realized most models after the 355 do not have rear badges.

Why has Ferrari opted out of badging the rear of their cars?

I would guess it's a trend toward cleaner tail panels. A Ferrari is a Ferrari - no need to dwell on what model it is.

Before the 308 GT4 and Boxer, in fact, did Ferrari use rear model designations? Not sure... I think it was something that became more popular in the '70s.

Not having rear badges is nothing new. If you think about it, alot of various models had no model designation, perhaps just "crossed flags" or a chrome cavallino in addition to the "Ferrari" emblem.
    Examples: 250 PF coupes or cabriolets, 250 GTO, 250 MM (PF or Vignale body), 250 Europa, 250 GTE, 250 GT/L (Lusso), 275GTB 2 & 4 cam, just about any 365 model (365GT 2+2, C/4, Daytona, Boxer, etc.).

Some 575M had badges didn't they? The Superamerica has badges (albeit on the C pillar, or whatever its called) and the F430 has the model designation on the mirror :)

Edit - and a 360CS has the "Challenge Stradale" rear badge

Okay, somebody had to say it:

"Badges? Badges? We don' need no steenkin' badges!!". :p

Oddly enough, in the ricer world, owners have been removing their badges -- before somebody on the street swipes them.

I am not sure about the Superamerica, I have not seen one in person.
Here is a pic that suggests no badge.

There is always a prancing horse - the only badge that really counts!

Non-enthusiasts always think it is a Mustang anyway, so why confuse them any further with model badges. :)

'04 and on 575's had a 575M badge on the right rear - I thought it looked out of place personally.

I think that the people who care enough to know what model it is already know the model. To me it seems that only gearheads will keep up with that sort of thing and we generally read about them in Road and Track or Car and Driver before we see one. For most everyday people just seeing that prancing horse is all they need to know.

    +1

I remember the badge-crazy '70s-'80s, where every car just had to have its engine displacement, trim level, the ubiquitous fuel injection proclamation and the marque name spelled out.

I'd think a 575M owner knows what he has and isn't too worried about the general public mistaking it for a 550 - in part because the general public sees the prancing horse and doesn't have any further questions.
