Hello, was heading down to Algar Ferrari yesterday for some service in my 1991 348, when I noticed that when I accelerated the rpm's went up but the car did not seem to accelerate normal. I stopped at a light and when I pulled out in first gear the rpm's went up high and the car pulled out very, very slowly. This happened in my NSX and it turned out to be the clutch master cylinder. Anyone have any suggestions? Either way its now at Algar, but I am just curious. Thanks

Clutch is slipping. Sounds like it is time for a new one.

    "What do clutches go for?"

It depends entirely on what is found when the clutch is removed. The labor is quite easy, you don't have to pull the transmission out to replace the clutch. But there are some variables:

    - Does the car have a single disc clutch or a twin disc clutch?
    - Is the brake/clutch fluid leaking from the slave cylinder?
    - Is the transmission fluid leaking from the "triple seals" on the shaft?
    - Is the Kluber grease leaking from the flywheel?
    - Is the flywheel badly scored or warped, or the internal parts burned out by lack of grease?

The easiest scenario is that the disc is simply worn below the specified thickness and you need just a new disc and pressure plate.

The very worst case scenario is that everything is worn out, including the flywheel, and all of the seals are leaking. Flywheels are horrendously expensive ($2500 ++) and getting difficult to obtain.

    Good luck!

Do not drive it as you will continue to damage the flywheel. They may be able to resurface it.
