This might sound strange, even for me. My 98' 355 makes fog horn sounds every few minutes for around 20 minutes after I shut it down. Not the ting-ping-ting from the pipes, but something that sounds like a fog horn complete with what sounds like a distant ship responding. Has anyone else heard this?
I remember in the 60's and 70's when people reported the same noises regardless of starting or stopping their cars! It was the dope!
Mine does it. More like a "mooo mooo" when the engine is hot, and I turn the car off and slam the door shut.
(In a bad imitation of a Czechoslovakian accent) Ha-Ha, laugh while you can monkey boy! Soon you'll be hearing the horns. (In a New Jersey accent) Its not the gas cap. The sound comes from the front passenger side of the engine bay.
Okay, I'm glad someone else said it too, because my car has done this once while I was standing next to it. I parked it in the garage and this low whine, sort of hydraulic sounding, seemed to come from the driver's side wheel well. My old S500 did things like that all of the time, so I didn't worry, but I am curious.
And the plastic monkey in the hula skirt goes to ernie. Upon completing an exhaustive study that Mulder and Scully would be proud of, a solution to this quandary has been exposed. It seems that although the source of the strange mooo-mooo fog horn like sound was the front passenger side of the engine bay, the reason for the sound was indeed pressure in the gasoline storage system. (aka gas tank) Upon ernies suggestion I removed the bung device (aka gas cap) and BAM! No more noise! You guys are jeaniouses. Tanks.
