Valencia will host a Formula One Grand Prix next season after agreeing to a seven-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone, it was announced on Thursday.

The deal was announced on Thursday in the Spanish city in a press conference with Ecclestone, who was joined by the Valencian government's president Francisco Camps, and Valencia's mayor Rita Barbera.

The race, which will be known as the European Grand Prix, will take place on a street circuit around the Mediterranean city, which is currently hosting the 32nd edition of the America's Cup.

This way, Spain will have two Grands Prix in the future, as the Barcelona circuit has a contract with Ecclestone until 2011.

I like Valencia, so this sounds good to me. What do you guys think?

Any additional street circuit is a good idea, there just aren't enough of those in the calendar.

But I don't like the idea of a Euro GP (never liked that) and axing a British or French GP over it is really bad.

PS: I wonder why Bernie made that deal. Obviously he thinks that Alonso has many prosperous championship years ahead. :) I mean it is no coincidence that with the departure of MS the 2nd German GP gets axed. Come to think of it: Why isn't there a Finnish GP?

My thoughts exactly. Bernie is capitalizing on the funds expended by the America's Cup for the facilities constructed for the race this year.

I'd be in Finland in a heartbeat if they'd have a GP - in fact that's a great idea Andreas. I love Finland, been there many times.

I *believe* there never was one. I only remember the Swedish GP. Would be nice, I agree Finland is a nice place to visit.

I was thinking the same exact thing before I read your post. There have been 2 Finnish WDC, Keke Rosberg and Mika. There are 2 current Finnish F1 drivers, Kimi and Heikki, and one son of a Finnish driver Nico Rosberg. Yet only 1 Spanish WDC and one Spanish driver on the grid, Alonso.
Then again, does Finland have any tracks capable of an F1 grand prix?

Kinda reminds me of Monaco, especially with that one stint by the water. Copy cats.

Is Valencia the track with a corner named after Alonso or am I thinking about another one?

Btw, what are those tanks on the left (west?) side of the track. Storage tanks for oil or something? It looks like a really industrial part of town. Not an area I thought F1 would go to.

    P.S. 4000th post. :)

How about two GPs in the US? Much bigger than Europe.

Maybe it would get more Americans to follow the sport.

    Alonso will like it.

Yeah, the track layout doesn't look that great, but the atmosphere looks to be VERY cool.

I'm a strong believer that copying something good is better than inventing something bad: In that sense I much rather have a Monaco copy than another Tilke trauma.

Actually I like the variety and multitude of turns. It is not like some of the US city courses that were nothing but 90 degree turns. And it goes by some spectacular scenery (just guessing here, never been to Valencia), particularly that harbor bridge looks dramatic.

And best of all: With that "map" in hand I can drive a rental car on yet another F1 track :) :) :)
