Since on the F355 there are straight pipes to replace the cats I wonder if there would be an interest in a more resonable bypass pipe that would eliminate the secondary cats? Not like the overpriced Jap versions but something more on the order of a stock design without the cats? Obviously there would be less backpressure, better flow. Isn't that what the bypass was designed to do? I figure with my Hyperflows it would be a great addition. Relatively quiet at the stoplight and screaming for vengance at full throttle. Would $900 be too much for lets say a 304 SS design? Or are we talking about a minimal gain in performance and sound?

    Regards, Steven

There are smog test concerns with a design as you mention in many states but in partiular in Calif.

I assume Nevada is not as strict.

What you suggest sure makes sense, but an alternative method would be to design a whole system that does away with the 2ndary system all together but which allows the car to pass smog.

This would yioeld considerable HP gain and weight loss if it worked.

I figure that the people who would gain the most would be the ones that still have stock headers and cats. Of course the exhaust flow follows the path of least resistance and this could help flow and heat reduction. Since there relatively easy to replace (1 hour) maybe it would be of interest to someone who tracks their car occasionally. Would $700 be too much for this? I like the idea of the 360 style exhaust. How much?

The problem with removing the restriction the bypass cats and valve cause(at low rpm), is the CELs come on because the exhaust flows thru that upper piping and not sufficiently over the 02 sensors that are located in the lower piping where the main cats are.

The system Steve mentioned could certainly be designed. The problem is that it is a major system redesign that requires testing. It is probably one Ferrari considered as it has been greatly improved on the 360.

After seeing how the factory built the 355 muffler internals, a system improvement would be in order.

It would yield tremendous weight savings and HP gains.

Make it work for Calif and it will pass every where else.

But again it would take tremendous design time.

Would it not be more politically correct today to state a "cave person"!

    We can't disengender possibilities.
