As you may or may not know, earlier today, Richard Rawlings and Dennis Collins announced a record breaking drive from New York to California with a time of 31 hours and 59 minutes. Immediately following the announcement, the web community began to cast doubt on that claim.

Alex Roy issued this official rebuttal from the Fast Lane Daily studios earlier today:

last i heard last night from the founder of the bullrun that it was 3000 miles trying to do it in 31 or so hours, i guess you have to avarage 90-95mph they had extra fuel cells in the car.
    sounds too crazy.

What I was told by about 4 different bullruners last night and read on a couple of blogs is that they're trying to make that time right now. Its a $50K bet. They'll have to break the record from NY to CA and then drive to Key West and finish with Bullrun to win.

like bryan said we are getting a fuel cell put in. Hopefully we will only have to stop once and im sure we can find other creative solutions to stopping for the restroom. Plus we got XM Traffic to help us out along the way.

One car, speeding late at night at an average speed of under 90 mph... Sounds doable.

I'm skeptical, though. I'd want there to be bigger, louder, more vocal press coverage from independent journalists. I mean, if you were gonna really do this, you'd have press at the start, press at the end, press observing for some duration... and you'd want to smash the record. By a LOT more than 9 minutes.

If you're serious, get some press lined up TOMORROW. ...or you'll have more credibility problems than them.

Martin, would love to have you but we gotta save as much weight as we can. Yeah we really are doing this. At first we were just kidding thinking about it, but now we are doing it. Route will be determined by GPS with XM traffic nav. Dont really know what the rules are but we are assuming one coast to one coast. So NYC/NJ area to LA area is what we are aiming for.

NYC/NJ area to LA area ain't gonna cut it. Read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonball_Baker_Sea-To-Shining-Sea_Memorial_Trophy_Dash Make sure you get the right start and the right finish. Rawlings and Collins started on 34th Street and finished at the Portofino in Redondo. The record started in Darien, CT, which was 50 miles longer than the run that Rawlings run last weekend. This, of course, does not take in to account the US Express record of 32 hours and 7 minutes.

If you're gonna go for fun, go. It'll be fun and we'll all love to read about it. If you're gonna go for a record -- know what record you're trying to break and don't get ****ed by poor planning.

As Emil said...you can't discount the US Express. The car's were a different breed. It was Very Pure back then...no publicity, everything low profile and under the radar.

My father left the Ferrari's at home, and took one of his 928'S and came in second the year after this record at some 36 hrs. They made 2 fuel stops, and ZERO tickets going out.

Here is the Trailer to the film...
