I just sent off an item priority mail to a customer that usually runs about $8.00 for a 4 lbs item with box. As of today it ran me over $12.00. Not to mention that the post office employees this morning were completely lost with the new package size calculating system. It's going to make things all the more costly to do business now on EBAY & Ferrariads.com.

Sorry for the rant but someone had to say something about it.

    :(

That's quite a jump in price. The sneaks just seem to focus on the new price of a letter but don't tell you everything is going up. The guy that runs the place has the balls to also say that even with the new prices they still expect a loss, IOW get ready for another price increase down the road.

Here's a link to the new pricing.

I'm going now to ship items via FEDEX or UPS, I knew about the increase but never thought it was going to be so expensive.

I **just** got into a verbal tirade with some b!tch at the PO. Some older idiot woman using the automated postal machine for some stupid bulk mailing. She had four or five people behind her as she individually weighed and used her credit card to buy postage for what seemed like 20 separate items. I was there for five minutes before I piped up and said something. Everyone else there was there for a book of new stamps, but this beeyotch did not care. She got sh!tty with me and I called her a not-so-nice name. On my way out, one of the people (guy in dress clothes and a tie) in line shook my hand and thanked me for saying something. Why don't people ever say anything?

USPS rates are going up a LOT.

The biggest increase is in first-class packages (not letters). It used to be something like $0.40 for the first ounce, and $0.10 for each additional ounce. Whatever it was, I can tell you I could send an 8oz padded envelope for $0.83.

Now, that same 8oz package is $2.32. Thats around a 300% increase! Amazingly huge. I HATE how the PO jacks rates up in such huge increments. Also, FedEx and UPS are, by law, prohibited from offering any sort of letter service. Let a totally private company handle it, the USPS is a waste of time money and resources. Up here north of Boston, it's a bunch of small towns all adjoining each other. EVERY single one has at least one post office, often more than one. Many PO's are within 2 miles of each other, they generally occupy prime real estate, employ multiple people, and almost all lose money. Not to mention the salary and bennies of the workers.

Just a massive black hole of money that we could all do without.

The worst part of this mess for me is that I stuck 3 bills in my mail box for pick-up this morning with last week's stamps on them. I didn't get a newspaper this morning because my paper-boy is apparently retarded. When I came home for lunch, I picked up my "late arriving paper" and there on the front page in big print is. "Postal Rates Go Up Today". DOH!

I will probably get the damn things back for insufficient postage and the bills will wind up being late.

    Being uninformed just sux.

It's still not a bad way to go. Personally I rarely use stamps for anything. Online banking takes care of that. As far as shipping USPS is convenient to use and they don't charge for pick up at the door for a parcel like the others do now. Labels can be just printed out on your puter and charged to your CC. I think the insurance coverages is better. I'm sure it's a heck of a lot cheaper then the competition if you compare.

The only thing the US Government does well, is the military. That's it. Everything else they do being a natural failure should be of no surprise.

If they continue to raise prices on postage, I had better be able to buy gourmet flavored stamps instead of that nasty "glue" taste.

USPS has always been a hassle to deal with for me, which is why I use UPS. I just drop it off at the "UPS Store."

I once heard that USPS had to raise rates because people are using email and the Internet more. I think it's true that people are mailing letters less, but with online shopping I think people are mailing a lot more packages than they used to. It seems that raising prices will discourage people from using USPS thus losing even more $$$ and going somewhere like UPS instead. Keep the prices lower and more people will use the service. The only good thing I see coming out of it is less junk mail.

Gas prices going up, stamp prices going up, etc. How come my salary doesn't go up? :)

I am lucky to work right next to a post office, and have had pretty good experiences. But the rate hike sucks, I sell little things here and there on ebay all the time, and now it might be a waste of time as shipping packages will be alot higher...I will be shipping one today and check out the difference.

I've noticed a lot of Ebay sellers now going UPS or FEDEX only. I used to ship all my items USPS priority mail but now that will be not cost effective to ship that way anymore. Even standard rate will be a pointless option, the USPS really shot themselves in the foot over this.

It does suck that they hiked prices but for the self employed USPS has them beat especially with the mailman coming to your door anyway. With the ability to print and pay for your own labels there's really no need to physically go to a post office. Big time and gas saver ;)

Funny - most companies when they are faced with decreasing sales and decreasing income, make cut backs. They don't complain and double or triple their prices whilst they have a monopoly on the service!

The USPS's biggest problem is their gigantic enormous OVERHEAD. They could close at LEAST 1/2 their post offices, streamline their whole business, and increase productivity and efficiency and they would not be constantly whining about their situation.

At some point, their prices will hit UPS/FedEx prices, and at that level, competition will blow them away. They are imbeciles next to UPS & FedEx.

I just can't wait till the day that e-mail and the currier companies put USPS out of business for good.
Not long ago I had an argument with a PO employee, it was useless since my cat has higher IQ that this guy, about the price of the stamps.
I argued that they should honor the stamps that you already have. The way I see it, when you buy a book of stamps, you are paying for the service in advance, therefore a future increase will be financed by future sales of stamps.
When millions of people buy books of stamps, the USPS receives millions of dollars before they deliver a single letter. It is up to them to use that money wisely before they have to deliver the mail.
Many companies would be happy to get paid in advance. Not the USPS.

I don't really view it that way, it helped build this country. Imagine mailing a letter from anywhere, dropping it in a box, and it will get anywhere else in the entire country, and for the longest time this was done for less than .25 cents.

Internet e-mail changed everything, and internet sales changed everything, I could almost see the USPS going belly-up, and that would not be good. I don't like the attitude that half the USPS workers have, but hell, I don't the attitudes of half the employees in ANY company.

The USPS needs to jump into the 'Eighties' and mirror their competition (UPS and FedX). In many respect's, they are really in the stone age. I am a daily UPS shipper and seldom veture into the post office.

My local post office is a classic example of something worse than going into the DMV. Five clerk windows with two (at best) workers manning things. They have NO inscentive to do ANYTHING fast! Coupled with all the chit-chat they do with each customer ("how are the kids, how is the wife, how are the cows doing in your field".....bla bla bla....), it should be the CUSTOMERS that go 'postal', NOT the workers!

To part 1, wrong. I am sure that the bulk mailing companies have a different scale of rates that they pay and those rates will go down if anything.

And your salary doesn't go up because there has not been any inflation in the US since 1974. Just ask the guvernmunt.
