    Hi,
I have a '95 456 manual. I've owned the car since new...it currently has 22k miles and has always been totally reliable and fanatically serviced. The other day when reversing out of my driveway which is on a slight incline, the trans "popped" out of reverse...no funny noises and the lever was fully engaged with the clutch completely out. I've driven it once since that day and the lever vibrates a little when in neutral but the vibration goes away completely when the clutch is engaged. No problems in any of the forward gears. I put the car on a rack and all the mechanicals between the shift lever and the transaxle are in perfect order. The clutch is original and I've never abuse the car in the slightest and it engages normally. I've read that bad motor mounts might cause this vibration and engagement problem? Also read that the self leveling system might cause this as well? Maybe it's the clutch but I don't see how?? I need any suggestions as I can't find any history of manual trans problems for the 456/550 cars. HELP!! I need any ideas on what this might be as I can't see how it's an internal transmission issue.

    Hi John,
Did I understand correctly: the reverse gear popped into neutral while the shift lever was in the reverse slot?
    Has it happened again?

To those that have read this post...the trans problem I experienced was with the motor-mounts...which by the way, were replaced exactly two years ago with the updated factory parts. Seems even the updated parts aren't any good...or maybe it's better said that the new parts are just as bad as the old ones. The dealer says that the Stradale (sp?) mounts are better and fit the 456/550's. FNA says they won't pay for anything either. Total job is about $1200. FNA told me that the mounts last as little as 14-15 months so everyone needs to check these!

The updated mounts are better than the originals but not by a great deal.

Not sure which Strad-mounts they refer. Can only guess. Did dealer mention which?

Realize the replacements are better, but johnghini mentions others. Would you consider [whatever turns out to be the mounts he is talking about] a valid/better replacement? realize this is speculation until we know what mounts he refers.

The Stradale motor mounts look the same as a 456 mount. I suspect the theory is they are harder rubber because vibration isolation was not as high a priority on them. If so it is better that replacing mounts every 2 years which seems to be the upper limit of the life for the new ones. Ferrari needs to get real and design some good motor mounts for them but I suspect that will not happen since the cars we are talking about are out of production and out of warranty.

    thanks.
From your comments, I take it, the Stradale mounts would be the better option, but still not a 'final/best' solution and therefore might be [Stradale mounts] something to use if/when I need them on my 456.

    Maybe.

I just looked them all up. 360, 430, 550/575, Enzo and Stradale all look the same. I have no idea what if any dimensional differences exist. I have replaced many but have never done side by side comparisons. The 612 and I presume the 599 use a very different part (wonder why?). Interestingly the Enzo and Stradale use the same part #. Supports my suspicion that it is a more solid mount. 430 is a different # again.

It would be interesting to do a side by side of all of them.

If something is not done in Maranello I will have to look toward fabricating something because it is far to hazardous for the 456 and 550 motors to be running around with bad mounts. Ferrari has already sold too many replacement motors because of them.

I did notice similar thing at 2nd gear under heavy acceleration load. I could touch the tip of the lever and it would go into neutral. (happened only a few times but went away after clutch change) I believe the dealer said somthing to do with the pressure plate or springs which is transmission not clutch. Again I did the gumball in as is condition.. nothing happened.. something to watch out for the future I guess.. but you are saying it has to do the with the motor mounts.. I had mine checked.. I am told motor mounts are fine..
