Recently saw a (fairly small) plane fly above, quite interesting design. I think I might have seen a show on it once, but can't remember the name. Anyone know?

Looks like it could be an Adams, Velocity or there was an older one with an Italian name - I forget which (anyone?). They're all pretty much the same principal.

The Velocity looks quite different and it was much bigger than the Adams..

Yeah, maybe I wasn't precise enough - it was small for a plane, as I very rarely see anything other than commercial passenger jets here. For a private plane class though it was actually quite big.

I think it might have been the Piaggio, although I'm under the impression the fuselage was longer and straighter (as in; didn't have such a curved outline - so my sketch is a bit off). Also the front winglets were quite small, so rather not the Beechcraft.

PS Cool - Piaggio Aero is a Ferrari partner :)

The Beech dosen't have a traditional tail like the Piaggio does so that could be a defining characteristic to deliniate the two from underneath.

Not many starships still left out there. Sales were rather weak and most that were sold were leased. When the leases came due Beechcraft was able to recall and decommision them. I believe that most were ground up and burned as there was very little recyclable metal material in the airframe.

How come the front wings on some pictures are at a different angle than others? Do they move?

they move like a traditional tail wing. they are called Canard's. If memory serves the French started using this on their fighters as did SAAB and russians on one of their planes too.

No canards on the Concorde. It was a delta wing (ie didn't need them). The Rutans (Designers of the Beech Starship) have been using canards on their designs for years.

He said "copycat" Concorde, which is the Tu-144. http://vliegtuighomepage.nl/tu144tup.jpg

They needed to add the movable canards for landings to help stabilize the airplane and give it more control.

Btw, I was thinking of that starship as well. Very few of those are in private hands now and Beech is not making spare parts for them. Most were leased (iirc) and they called them back and scrapping them. What a shame.

Edit: All of these were in line to get scrapped. :( http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=0540580&WxsIERv=Orrpu%202000%20Fgnefuvc%201&Wm=0&WdsYXMg=Hagvgyrq&QtODMg=Znenan%20-%20Cvany%20Nvecnex%20%28Fvyire%20Oryy%20NUC%29%20%28ZMW%29&ERDLTkt=HFN%20-%20Nevmban&ktODMp=Znepu%208%2C%202004&BP=1&WNEb25u=Qrerx%20Uryyznaa&xsIERvdWdsY=A631QF&MgTUQtODMgKE=Jnvgvat%20sbe%20gur%20vapvarengbe.&YXMgTUQtODMgKERD=56510&NEb25uZWxs=2004-03-24%2000%3A00%3A00&ODJ9dvCE=&O89Dcjdg=&static=yes&width=1024&height=695&sok=JURER%20%20%28nvepensg_trarevp%20%3D%20%27Orrpu%202000%20Fgnefuvc%201%27%29%20%20beqre%20ol%20cubgb_vq%20QRFP&photo_nr=34&prev_id=0540690&next_id=0536190

The Piaggio is really neat.....it is quiet....and you can actually stand up inside.....unlike many private jets.

Yeah, but because of the head room, it looks like a fat pig from the outside. :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Avanti-on-tarmac.jpg

The Starship looks great, but lacks in the performance area.

The Piaggio also takes forever to refuel! It looks cool and is fast for what it is/costs though!

Truth be told.... Wright brothers. The original heavier than air flying vehicle design.
