Mondial aftermarket wheel offset

I apologize if this has been covered before, but I've searched the forum and thought I had an answer, but a discussion with a wheel shop provided me with a disparate answer.

The question: Would a 17x8 wheel (5x108 bolt pattern) with +40 mm offset work on a Ferrari Mondial?

I was advised by a wheel shop that the Mondial requires a 0 offset. That doesn't seem to make sense to me as the Mondial's stock wheels look to have a pretty significant positive offset. (The wheel center looks nearly flush with the lip of the wheel instead of being dished.)

If anyone would assist me, I would greatly appreciate it! I have yet to receive my Mondial, but I'm already planning to remove the TRX tires and wheels.

In terms of setup, the 40mm offset would work but would result in (inter alia) more bump steer. Zero offset would push the rim horribly outboard.

 

Wow! Thank you Zertec! I can't believe I missed that thread. That answers my questions. I think I can live with a little bump-steer if it saves me from having to buy four 240/55-390 TRX tires at $415 a piece! YIKES!

Looks like we are back to sharing a common brain again....I am also shopping for wheels for my yet-to-be-delivered Mondial! I was just wondering which wheels you were thinking about....I am trying to decide between 348 and 355 wheels myself. I think I will probably go with the 348 wheels, as they seem to be about half the price of 355 wheels, and I like both styles more or less equally on the Mondial.

LOL - yeah, I think we're going to be going through a lot of the same things together!

I had thought about the 348 and 355 wheels, then I thought about the 16" reproduction from Superperformance.uk... but after some thought, I decided that I'd probably go aftermarket for wheels. My calculations show that a 240/55-390 is about 25.7" in diameter, so I was looking for a 245/45-17 which is 25.6" in diameter. A 245 width tire would make me look for a 7.5 or 8" wide wheel.

I have Shoreline Motoring (in Huntington Beach) looking at reasonably priced wheels for the Mondial, but 2 wheels that caught my eye off eBay that are very reasonably priced are the Voxx MG and the Voxx Misano.

Man, I really do like BOTH of those wheels. I honestly can't decide which one I like better, I don't think you could go wrong either way. What were the prices on those?

Maybe we should form some sort of New Mondial Support Group, dedicated to stamping out ignorance and confusion about the best way to get rid of metric wheels.

Those wheels are, believe it or not, $400 a set + 100 shipping on eBay from "2 Day Parts" They are 17x7 (for the 5-spoke "MG"), or 17x8 (for the Misano -mesh pattern wheel) with 5x108 bolt pattern and ET +40 offset. I'm leaning toward the Misano myself, but mostly for the 8" width. Otherwise the 7" width, 5-spokes look awesome to me. Maybe I need to photoshop these on a Mondial? Y'know, to suppor the MSG and all...

FWIW, I have been looking at the Voxx MG 17x8's (for 308) just this past week from either 2day parts or Discount tire. Dicount tire is $130/wheel, shipping ?

The only catch is that the 17x8 +20's are on about a 2 month backorder from both places.

The store closest to me has 17x7's +40 in stock....

It looks like I'm going to start with 30mm thick spacers/adapters, 5x4.25 (5x108mm) to 5x4.5 (5x144.5). This will give me more option since the stock offset on a 308 is +11. As such a lot of similar wheels to the Voxx MG come in +40, which if I use the 30mm spacer/adapter will get me close to the +11 OEM. That of course is for 308, not mondi but perhaps some help.

Aditionally, way back there was a guy who found some American racing wheels that were direct bolt on, including offset for a mondi. I've got no clue as to the lnik or thread, but you might want to check them out as well.

As a final thought for the night...

There seems to be 2 ways you can go on wheels for a Ferrari.

1. Go through a place like Speedline, Compomotive, etc who will give you a top quality world class wheel (and won't be affraid to charge you for it) that will directly fit your application...

or

2. Do your own leg work and find a wheel that fits your specs and get if from a regular retail outlet.

If you choose #1, you simply wirte the check and wait for the wheels to show up.

If you choose #2 you can't count on any kind of help from the person behind the counter or on the phone at pep boy's, wheel max, discount tire, etc. If it doesn't show up on their computer screen, it does not exist in the universe....

If you are a DIYer like me, you'll need to do the measurements, research, leg work and ivestigation on your own. Then walk into the store that carries the wheel of your choice and say "this (spec) is what I want" and what it's for doens't matter to you because you probably can't spell it anyway.

Thanks Meister. I got a number to Ronal USA and to American Eagle because, apparently, they have fitments for the Mondial and, I would guess, the 308 as well. But I agree... there's the easier route of purchasing what is immediately available, or there's the (as you stated) DIY approach which might mean finding a wheel that will work, but will require milling the center bore, etc.

I'll advise what I find out. I plan to stop at Discount Tire near me to take a look at both the Misano and the MG in person to determine what I think will work best for the Mondial.

As an aside, I am still a bit torn as to which tire size to use. The metric TRX size translates into using a 245/45-17. But I'm not sure if I want to go staggered (less steering effort required, more understeer, rotating tires not an option) or going with the same size tire all around (can rotate, higher effort steering.) My inclination is to go with tires that I can rotate and live with the higher steering effort...

if you decide to go with the same size all round, would suggest you consider 225 section -- tire tech has come a long way since trx. the 3.2 and t came with 225 in the rear using pos gatorbacks, so newer tech would be even better. Perhaps a 225/50. Also don't be afraid of taller tires - they would make your speedo MORE accurate.

Later model Mondial wheels have the same offset as the old metrics. I lucked out several years ago and picked up a set of '89 wheels for my '85 Cab off Ebay for $1000.

I just checked on Tire Rack, and the recommended, staggered size for a 17" rim is 225/45-17 front, 255/40-17 rear. Interesting as those are both not as tall as the TRX tire and are about 3% smaller. Did Ferrari change the speedometer ratio/gearing for the Mondial 3.2 and Mondial T?

I guess I could go 225/50-17 all the way around. That would put me at 25.8" diameter, or about .5% taller. I'd like to get a bigger footprint on the ground since the Mondial is a 3500 pound car, and I do like to put a car through its paces...

Well, after chatting with Charlie at 2 Day Parts, it's come down to this:

1. The Voxx MG is only available (currently) in a 17x7 with ET +40. If this wheel is used, I would pretty much have to use the 225/50-17 sized tire since a 245 width tire would be too wide on a 7" rim.

2. The Voxx Misano and Ancona (Ancona looks like a Mercedes C32 AMG style wheel) are available in 17x8 with ET +40 offset. Using this wheel would allow use of a 225/50-17 or a 245/45-17 tire.

My wife prefers the MG, while I like both. I think the MG would provide a more classical Ferrari look, while the Misano, as my wife states, has more of a snowflake look about it. Decisions, decisions...

IMO, not too bad, but I prefer not to have the extra lug holes that manufacturers add to accommodate multiple lug patterns. Plus I'm not a big fan of extra rivets/bolts around the wheel unless the wheel is truly a modular wheel.

I did more research and, if going with at 7" width, I'd think you'd want to look for a +35 or +38 offset wheel for the Mondial. I will almost certainly go with an 8" wide wheel and +40 offset, so it looks like the Misano for me.

I will call Voxx directly tomorrow to see if they can confirm the diameter of the center bore. It will need to be at least 67 mm in order to clear our hubs. I'll post what I find out...

Searching around the web, I think the Voxx wheels have a center bore of 74.1 mm (I'll confirm with a phone call tomorrow.) The Mondial has a hub diameter of 67.1 mm. That means that we're going to need a hubcentric ring. 1010tires.com has just the rings needed for $22.99 for the set. Again, I'll double check the bore, but if I'm right, we'll need those hubcentric rings.

I'm looking for a 308 which I guess has OEM of +11. Thus I'm looking for something in the +40 range and will have to use a 30mm adapter/spacer to bring me into that range.

I happen to be running +19F,+13R at the moment.

It's funny about the ADR wheel. That pic is right off their site and shows the multi-holes. The pic of www.eliteswholesale.com shows the same wheel but only with 5 holes....which I prefer as well.

From 1010tires.com, you can purchase either plastic hubcentric rings ($22.99) or aluminum hubcentric rings ($32.99) The hubcentric rings required are 73mm outside diameter, 67.1 mm inside diameter. America's tire should also have the same.

Scott from Voxx Wheel was an amazing wealth of knowledge. He advised, even with the hubcentric ring, there may be some vibration in the steering wheel since the wheels are made lug-centric. So his advice was to go to America's tire since, if there's a problem, they can help to resolve the vibration or can accept the wheels as returns.

Thanks Bob - fantastic data.

I just pulled out the original 390mm metric wheel that I kept for a spare and verified that the stock offset is +51 for my '85 Euro-Cabriolet.

FWIW I've been running 225/55/16 front and 245/50/16 rear as they calculate closest to the original metrics in diameter.

A friend bought their locking valve caps from them last year for his 360, and then I did the same. Very nice quality and no problems getting them, other than delivery is slow. They are obviously flying well below the trademark radar somehow.

Let us know how you make out with the wheel order, I may be right behind you. If so, I'll probably put my '89 16" Mondial wheels up on Ebay to finance the upgrade. I'm already not original so no point in keeping the 16s.

I just remembered to measure the center hub on the Mondial - it's 79mm so I'll need to figure out how to deal with going from large hub on the car to smaller 73mm hub on the wheel. If I go ahead, I'll probably just machine the 11mm spacers I need the make things fit - including the hubs - depending on how deep the hubs are on the rotors - I'm assuming they are only a couple three mm.
