I watched recent issue at VODCars.com and there was that tunnel video. This inspired me to do some research and I found those two flics on youtube:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=RE-CwVQWQb0
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=sjMyf5xUceg

That made me think (which is quite unusual)... NYC has 4 tunnels, skyskrapers and busy car scene. Why don't we do our own Tunnel Run???

Idea is to gather on weekend night (Friday or Saturday) around midnight and "cruise" through all 4 tunnels and downtown Manhattan and enjoy music coming out from the tail pipes. After 2 hrs of driving we could stop by some "food place" and grab a hot coffee.

Here is a map of the tunnels: http://www.mta.info/bandt/images/btmap.gif

Hot nights are coming so it might be fun and relaxing drive. Especially for those who live a busy life during daytime.

The question is--how would you "block off" traffic for about a .5 to 3/4 of a mile so the film car and FAST CARS can do their thing?? NY bridges and tunnels are not exactly empty---EVER-- even at 3am there is traffic.

Id say the best bet is a weird time, like 4am on a sunday morning. But then who the heck wants to get up? you send in 2-3 regular cars, film car, then the exotics. When the film car enters the tunnel, just stop dead and have the exotics behind you waiting. traffic to get into the tunnel will build up for a few minutes, but by the time the toll takers notice, youll be off and running. When the 2-3 clearing out cars ahead radio you theyre far enough up, film car goes, then 30 - 40 seconds later the exotics take off.

Thatd be the way I would start brainstorming. Im sure the city wont help you stop traffic for such an event.

Would be cool though. If its not at 4am, Id love to be a part of it.

John... you think way too far in planning. I didn't think about special filming of it. Just have fun in making noise. Plus as soon as local authorities notice all the photo/video equipment on cars they'll pull us over. I'm sure you can launch couple cars at the time and let them rev up from time to time without blocking traffic.

For the same reason I suggested the time - midnight not 4am. It's an event to enjoy, not for the filming at 4am.

Pretty sweet idea! I had actually thought about doing something like this on my own actually. I had dropped a friend off in midtown Manhattan a couple of weks ago and the sound of the exhaust resonating through in bewtween the buildings was sweet. That and the Ferrari/ Shell commercial got me to thinking that it's been a long time since I cruised Manhattan late at night.

edit: forgot to mention the tunnel under Park Ave just before the old Pan Am building/ GCS! That's a reall good one.

If you don't film it, did it actually happen?

You still need to have 2-3 cars go in and leave a length open for the cars to get up to speed. You cant pass and weave inside a tunnel. Thats just not cricket, I dont care how nuts we are.

filming tunnels and bridges is illegal, I think the last thing Shivam wants is the 20 state police agences AND DHS after him.

The only tunnel that is long enough is the Battery Tunnel. At night, you can actually get it up to some crazy speeds in there. And it is LOUD. My old club went though there on a run and it was insane, loud, and fun....but be damn careful. Luckly we had about 10 cops in the club.

I am aware of legal issues of filming such a run, but just because it's coming from video guy doesn't mean I want to do it only for video purposes.

It's just brief idea about Exotic Midnight Run around downtown Manhattan to enjoy the cars at a little slower pace then usual (keep it in 2nd gear). Also it'll allow many ppl visiting the city at night to see and hear the rumble of upcoming wild horses, bulls and snakes... :) (and this we are allowed to film whenever we want).

BTW: It wouldn't be a large gathering - I'm not even aiming at 1/3 of what Keith is planning for his Poker Run.

I like the idea. As for cameras I would say strap some in or on(depending on the owner) the cars so it would be similar to the Getaway in Stockholm movies but driving responsibly of course...

BTW Lukas, sorry it's taking me forever to get those tapes to you, I'll send them out one of these days hopefully..

and heres a video link for reference.

Steve, I'm glad you're here to support the idea. At this point I want to organize small event to determine if it would be successful at all in future. Would be nice to have you Steve to help with video issues/additional footage. Also I need somebody to advise with the route/meet points/attractions... Anyone up for it?

    Guys,
I've lived in NYC a loooong time. If you want to do a tunnel run, do it at 6:00-8:00am on a Sunday morning, or late night from Monday to Wednesday. Otherwise, there are too many cars and Police around...

Very early Sunday morning is generally the way to go.

I'd do some covert film car stuff if people were interested. It's easy enough to avoid the attention of the popo if you're sneaky.

Part of the sneaky is doing the speed run in the middle of the tunnel and not towards the ends where the noise is easy to hear by the tunnel entrance and exit where the Police sit ;)
