599 and f40

The performance of the 599 is more accessable than in the F40. No circuit board, clutch, brake or turbo 'issues' hanging over your head. There is something to be said for the dependability of a brand new vehicle. Unlike an F40 you are not stuck with red as the only color. Perfection is also cool...

I have both a 599 and an F40. I have driven both at the limit. The F40 is a slow aged supercar in comparison with the 599. The 599 is superior in every way. Except for 1 important factor - the F40 is super cool forever and the 599 is just another mass production Fcar of the moment

 

Yes though mass production is a relative thing. And I think when many people think of "Ferrari" they think "red" and they think "wedge shape" and then they think "gotta have a lot of wings and cuts and ducts" and there is your F40. Whereas the 599 is a more complex shape. I love both. Just pointing out that I think on a street, parked next to each other the connoisseurs will know what the 599 is admire both, while the average person would mostly ignore it in favor of the F40.

Exactly. The 599 is relative to the F40 a mass production car. The F40 is one of an exclusive club - the supercar. Who gives a crap about mass production in any other context in this thread - 599 and F40

 

Exactly right! There will be several thousand 599's by the time production ends and no doubt there will be tweaks and changes along the way.
The F40 however is, simply put, a limited edition supercar, in line with the numbers produced for CGT and SLR - it seems as if the universe of buyers for that level of car is around 1,250.

As much as I love my 599, if I could only keep one, the F40 stays and the 599 is outa here!

 

+1. As I said above, "the F40 is super cool forever and the 599 is just another mass production Fcar of the moment". My 599 will be replaced in due course with the next mass production Fcar of the moment and the F40 stays. Mass production Fcar of the moment are for everyday consumption. F40's and the other limited production supercars are to be savoured at special times

 

As another 599/F40 owner - I wince a little when I hear the 599 described as "just another mass production Ferrari," but ... like everyone else ... I'll eventually trade/sell the 599. I'd only sell the F40 to make roomf or something very, very special.

I think the attitude described here partially explains the run up in vintage and classic car values.

 

+1. We are thinking the same - I was just a bit more direct. Don't get me wrong - I really love my 599. But I have to be realistic about how it will fit into the greater scheme of my car plans. Experience tells me that there will be a greater incarnation next time round. I loved my 550 and now I look at it as a classic car

 

I wonder if the 599 will change the rising prices of the F40. It is the lastest greatest and warranty. It moves out there pretty good. Nothing is as pretty as that F40 but the interior of the 599 is downright well done. I had wanted a F40 for several years but the car is aging and unless miles are put on it that may mean trouble.

 

I hadn't driven the F40 for a few weeks and I took it out yesterday to an SECC event. (See the Arizona subsection for pics). I think it really stood out among all the regular (and very lovely) 430's, 360's, a 355 a 308 and even a beautiful Boxer, to say nothing of the various Vipers, CGT's, GT3RS and other Porsches.
The best part of the day was driving home on nearly empty roads with a CS following me. We left a set of lights together, side by side and were running quite hard in first. I upshifted into 2nd and as the turbos kicked in at 3500RPM there was that rocket ignition feeling as the F40 literally launched forward. The CS driver was a a bit surprised I think at how rapid this aging supercar is. I sometimes forget just how brilliant a car the F40 really is and it deserves much more road (and track) time. I don't care one whit how the market devalues it for its mileage because I will keep this one forever.

 

I would be very surprised if any F40 buyer was dissuaded from buying an F40 by the superiority of the 599. Frequencies are completely crossed if that is the case. You buy an F40 for emotional reasons - it is THE supercar full stop. It feels great in all of its' mechanicalness. If you don't get that you were never an F40 person to begin with. The fact that the car is aging is a plus not a minus as the experience it offers intensifies with time. 599 is a mass production flavour of the month that will be eclipsed by the next mass production flavour of the month

 

Makes me want to get mine out and go for a blaat but it is raining like hell in HK!!!

 

Nice to hear you found a 'keeper' in the F40. Some people are never satisfied, always looking for the next thrill. Those people who don't drive their F40 are really missing out on a unique experience.

In terms of performance it should be quicker than the F40. All the acceleration figures I've seen on the 599 GTB have been quicker than any times I've seen for the F40. Count in the 599's considerably more powerful brakes and handling that combines the control of a race car and ease of use of a GT machine, and I'd bet on the side of the 599 GTB on most any track.

They're totally different cars though. Own both if you can IMO.
