Who is Secretive about their Ferrari Ownership?

It is the same in semiconductors. There have been royalty deals done where designers capture a % of sales or profit, but those seemed to die in the 1980's. Wealth in our industry is primarily created through stock gains with company founders, executives and top technologists seeing the greatest benefit. Our industry is maturing, but billionaires are still being minted; just look at Sehat Sutardja who is #374 on the Forbes 400 list.

Now back to Ferraris....................

 

that's what the topic was about...that some people have been 'shamed' or forced to live in a constant state of fear by others--so they are secretive about their 'success' or cars... and it shouldn't be like that. as has been mentioned, being aware relative to your workplace, your circumstances is at the crux of it all.

 

depends on who you are, the circumstances. sometimes it's beneficial, or ideal, that you have a 'presence'.... saying 'it's better to keep a low profile' is far too simplistic...narrow viewed.

 

Nope! NOT a good pt. Don't know what Fred was thinking, but that was a really offensive and stupid comment/assumption. How in the world can you attack someone in that way, without knowing what the heck you're talking about???

 

I have not even told myself yet.

I especially don't want Chris to know!

no need thanks. I drive all of my Ferraris whenever I can. It's like a baseball pitching rotation, except I have more starters. The SA is parked outside my office right now.

 

Well,,,, because I'm an (or The) engineer, with my name on his patent,, I get to drive a Ferrari. In fact, my client was sooo sad because I sold my 85,,

now, he is soooo happy I got an 82 Euro Mondial....

This is kind of off topic but, I just wanted to comment on the enormous wealth of knowledge, experience and motivation this site has. Even if I did not have a Ferrari or didn't want one, I would still find the site and the members very encouraging and motivating. Where else can you find such a diverse collection of educated and/or successful people from all sorts of professions in one site? I just wanted to say all you guys are great and certainly a source of motivation for me. If I had a kid, I would have him on F-Chat too for the same motivation that you all have given me!

To echo some earlier posts, I have friends that bring it up too and I hate it (tends to happen when they drink too much). Just a few weeks ago, I was at dinner with some very good friends who know about the car and one fairly recent friend who had come out with us. I head off to the restroom halfway through dinner and the first thing I hear out of the new friend as I get back to the table is "You didn't tell me you had a Ferrari!"

*sigh*

I said "I don't, I have a Dino."

Only my very close friends know about the car and I like keeping it that way.

 

Don't pick on old geezers (like me) with Buicks (like me). And don't drag race with them either if you have a Lusso. The LS1 Corvette engine in the last of the full size Buicks more than makes up for the weight.
But back to the thread - if you drive something as low key as a 330 GT most of the problems with being thought a snob will go away. Most people don't notice, and those who do are car nuts who don't mind. So I just drive it. And tell people if the subject comes up.

You know, although we are all touting the open society of ownership, in one form or fashion to those in 'the general public': a lot of commentators have rather cryptic profiles. Mind ya' it doesn't matter to this good discussion, but and interesting wrench in the blog-cog.

 

I don't announce it to everybody, just because the marque name implies massive wealth more than massive appreciation for sports cars. But when someone asks what I drive I'm proud to tell them -- and I do mention '328' instead of just saying 'a Ferrari'. If someone asks which one the 328 is, then I know I'm in for a real conversation.

I don't mind too much. I don't bring it up among strangers, but if someone else finds it interesting then I'm always happy to talk cars with people. My biggest frustration is that we have a world filled with dull cars, for the most part. No one has any imagination about what you can get for $50K or $80K or $110K. You know that a lot of guys driving minivans/SUVs have at least thought about a Ferrari at some point. If I have a chance to tell them the real story - good and bad - I'm all over it.

I struggled with this recently as a new F-car owner. The biggest issue was whether to bring it to work. It is an industrial settling. I bought the car for me, not to show off, and wanted to drive it as much as possible so I really wanted to bring it in. I looked around the parking lot and saw A6, A8, 545i, various Lexuses, etc. that are more pricey than my 308 and decided to take the plunge. I have taken it in once and it sure did draw a lot of attention, but all of it has been good so far. All of these car nuts come out of the woodwork and I have been sure to let anyone who expresses interest in the car a ride. I know I would have loved that before I had one. I expect I will see the downside at some point too, but you have to take the bad with the good and at least I am using it!

 

People will tend to mostly be attracted to newer Ferraris like 360 and F430... and offcourse the super cars such as F40, Enzo and F50... I doubt many will give a second look to older Ferraris...

 

I started out being really open about it. When we had a grad party for our son two years ago, he was adamant we have the car home and in the open garage. It kind of snubbed quite a few relatives. Ive tried picking up my daughter at school, but the second time she got comments I was just showing off. Screw it. I didnt buy the cars to flash everyone, I bought them for my own enjoyment and the few decent friends and family I have to enjoy. I could have a brand new SUV in the driveway that cost over $50K and it would go completely unnoticed. Yet a $20K something car ruffles thier feathers. It seems to irritate people even more when you tell them its free and clear. This country has sure gotten selfish and jealous of people prospering.

 

How true. However, this is nothing new. Back in the sixties, I took a lot of heat about my 1960 Corvette from a family member, a wealthy contractor, who not only drove a Caddy but, a caddy limo at that. Go figure.

 

Ferrari? What Ferrari?

 

I am not to sure about that, my neighbors / friends think my 91 348 is a new car when I first got it, and when they see 308 or mondial T coupe they think its only a few years old, the Ferrari design is somewhat timeless in its style..

and it could be that its a car you dont see eveyday on the road
