F360 clutch thread.

Im a auto technician at a workshop that over the past 18 months has been doing alot of work with Ferraris, particuarly with 360s and 430s. Now as we all know the 360 can have issues with cluth wear and operations and i have found that the replacement and setup of the clutches seems to be a bit of a black art even amongst some experienced techs.
Can we use this thread to post tips or answer questions on the clutch replacement or diagnosis?

Just a few examples,

1. Any thoughts on why a clutch/bearings seals/fly wheel replaced on one car will come out perfect after the transmission cycle is done, yet another will slip and over hear right away.

2. Do people replace the thurst bearing seals without fail while doing the clutch?

3. Is there an effective way to clean a F360 flywheel? Machining is a no no and once over heated even slightly it is very hard to stop a new clutch slipping on them even after attempting to sand back the face of the flywheel.

 

We have never found it a black art. It is a clutch just like any other.

Who says the flywheel should not be machined? The shop manual gives a machining limit. Have you read it?

 

Maybe you can share some tips, and what the specs are?

 

Specs are all in the book.

 

What if he doesn't have the book? How hard is it to post the specs? Or maybe you want to keep them secret?

 

If he bothered to fill out his profile, we might know where he's located and what the shop is.
Maybe the shop should have a book. The 360 clutch is not too different than most.

 

Okay and what about the guys that have the balls to fix their own cars? What about them? Do they have to have a shop too??? What is this, only share info with guys that have a shop? Or is it, lets help 360 owners?

Though I do agree he needs to fill out his profile.

 

I admire those who are willing to get their gloves dirty and wrench on the car themselves. I prefer doing as much work as I can, short of an engine rebuild.
But having a profile does lend some credibility and gives some insight to where they're coming from.

 

Do you want me to change it for him too? If he can't be bothered to at least have a book I can't be bothered to help any more than I am willing to feed and cloth a person who is too lazy to turn off the TV and at least try to provide for themselves. People have to make some minimum commitment. Having a book is the absolute bare minimum.

Besides by his own statement he is a mechanic in a workshop doing this for money. They should have a book.....Don't you think?

Or do you believe I should take time out of my day away from my clients to help him earn his livelyhood and the expense of mine so he can be cheap?

 

Ah, I see, so it's about money. You sure don't seem to have a problem taking time out of your day, and from your clients, to post on F-chat to the tune of over 7,300 post. So why couldn't you post a couple of specs?

How about doing it just to be a nice guy? How hard is that? I don't get paid one red cent and I share my limited knowledge with as many Ferrari owners as I can. You are always busting balls because people spread bad and misinformed info, but you do nothing to spread correct info, other than tell them that they don't know "wtf" they are talking about, or to take it to a shop. You are a very knowledgeable mechanic, but the sad things is that when you stop turning wrenches all that knowledge and experience won't do anyone else any good, and will be lost forever. All because you weren't getting paid to share it.

Look, fellows. The lord helps he who helps himself. The books are available on line. When I had my Lusso, I had hours of research involved just to get a copy of the book. Then, I asked a lot of questions. If you (or I) lack the expertise to tackle a heavy mechanical issue, by all means let the Rifledrivers of the world help out. Checking your oil or how to drive the car is YOUR job, not his. That is about as foolish as arguing with your physician about whether losing weight will lower your blood pressure.

If you go beyond your ability it will cost you big bucks. Not accepting professional advice is juvenile at best and stupid at worst. I'm just damn sorry the R-man is so far away from me or I would gladly compensate him for his experience and expertise. The easy stuff, I do. The hard stuff I pay for.
I read; I try. If I get stumped, I ask. Admit your ignorance and rectify it.

We need to give guys like R-man, Artvonne, and others our attention and our respect or we will lose them. That, my brothers would be a damn shame. IMHO.

I share specs and tips all the time. Sadly I don't have any for a 360. If I did, you can be sure that I would have posted them.

Now if we could just get someone to post some tips and tricks for changing a 360 clutch. Maybe even a few specs too. No it won't do me any good, but maybe it will help that 360 owner who wants to tackle the job himself.

 

Yeah, well the profession I asked to post some advice refuse to do so. So how can it be juvenile, or stupid, to follow professional advice you don't get?

Nobody is running any one any where. Besides, Brian doesn't come across as some cry baby that get his feelings hurt so easy.

 

I'm just saying that there are a lot of people on here who would be in a total jam if it wasn't for him giving advice, and they would be really upset if he left the forum.

I haven't seen him post any of this "advice" in this thread, or a lot of threads for that matter? I see more ball busting coming from him than anything.

No one here is incapable of finding needed info either here or anywhere else. There are lots of indy shops who will share information in the hopes of winning your business. If someone wants to tackle a job, like was said before there are manuals to give you some further understanding of what the job entails. Lots of people get in over their heads. I have yet to meet the guy who never has. The trick is to realize when you do get in over your head.

Troubleshooting is difficult and those with experience have a leg up on those without time in the given field.

Insults and put downs do not help anyone. This section is called "Technical Q&A", if someone thinks they can help then by all means do so. If not then go on to another thread instead of indulging oneself in flinging insolence on someones automotive misfortune.

 

Ok these are some specs i got out of a ferrari dealer. I was told the flywheels on the 360 were not to be machined due to the taper they have.

On many forums to which I submit and receive advice, the "main" posters generally are beginning to not give out information to the "newbies" who can't be bothered to fill out any profile. I read most threads on this Q&A section, many give me a good chuckle, maybe shake my head in disbelief of what is written, but sort through it all and you can learn a fair amount. The trick is to root out the self appointed "specialists" from the real-time, hands on, been there/done that guys, put it in perspective and draw your own conclusions.

Plenty of information available on cheap CDs, I buy everything I can for every vehicle coming through my shop plus browse these forums. Oh, and the pm is a great tool ;-)

I know that a few guys on this forum give out very useful info that is totally reliable, thanks Brian/Dave/Tom/Phil et al.
