    I have been reading the manual on adjusting the valve and a little confused, Does anyone know an easier way of explaining the steps to adjust 348 valves. I tried looking in the old post and found nothing.Thanx

    How about measuring them first. Do they need to be adjusted?

    The part where I am confused, Where it's printed.- (Bring the valve clearance of cylinder num 1 to 5 to .50 mm. An angle tolerance of +- 1 deg is permitted)Then refer to table #9 and the intake .20 (division sym) .25 mm Exhaust .30 () .35 mm does this mean + or -. Thanx

    Those are the ranges you can be in between, or how much gap you can have between the back of the cam and the top of the valve shim. You measure the gaps with the cam lobe facing away from the valve shim.

    For example, if you measured the gap on the intake cam and you got a measurement of .23mm you would be within the specs for the intake. But if you got a measurement of oh....19mm then you would be out of spec, and on the tight side. So you would need to put in a thinner shim to get the spacing back to within the specs of .20mm-.25mm. Like wise if your measurement yielded .26mm, then you would need to put in a thicker shim to close the gap up.

    Marco,

    Do not mix up:

    valve adjustment

    setting up cams

    degreeing cams

    These are all related but do not mean the same thing. You need to adjust valves before you can set up cams. You need to set up cams before you degree cams. The ranges specified are ranges of allowable valve clearnace to be considered factory spec o.k.. like 0.20mm to 0.25mm on the BASECIRCLE of the intake cam. The #1 to TDC valve opening o.50mm at X angle is for degreeing cams once you have set them to their base settings with the builder marks. Many do not degree cams they just stop at the builder marks and hope that they are close enough. Some use cam locks and ignore builder marks and hope the last mechanic did the job right or was close and then only adjust valves. It is your car so you have to choose your level of perfection.
