I have mixed feelings about the whole episode - the 'old-fashioned values' crowd always stood up for the women in their company, defended their honor, and all that. At least that's what folks of Paterno's generation pays lip-service to, or so I thought. Apparently, nobody feels that way anymore....if some loudmouth drunk started throwing insults at MY girlfriend like that, well, there'd be trouble. Now, if some dumb drunk is foolish enough to verbally assault a FOOTBALL PLAYER'S girfriend, and gets pummelled for it, well, stupidity should be painful. Big deal.

That's precisely why I like Paterno. In a world where excuses are made for athletes, Paterno holds his guys to a higher standard. To me, that shows class.

I don't think there would have been much of a problem if they'd just let it go after the street incident. Instead, he called his buddies and went into a party and pounded some heads.

I think Joe Pa did exactly the right thing. The rest of that team will pound the crap out of the guys who caused the problem, resulting in their cleaning the stadium. Nothing like peer pressure to influence future behavior.

I am pulling for Paterno for the Div 1 record. I like Bowden (he grew up a couple miles from where I did) but if I had a gun to my head I would go with Paterno.

I think they both may end up dying on the sideline.

After the last few years, it looked like JoePa had lost it, but this proves he is still in charge of his team. I like that the whole team has to do the punishment. Football has become more and more about the individuals, when it should be about the team. Maybe now the players will start looking out for their teammates and policing their own.

I really doubt forcing your team to do 'community service' will keep anyone out of trouble.

Look at all the 'church-goers' that have been jailed.

Look at all the 'smart guys' that have been jailed.

And, I can see an athlete not adhering to this new 'rule', 'it isn't part of the deal', lawyers will be called....

    I like this rule better:
You get arrested, you don't start until it's resolved.
If you are found guilty, you are off the team *OR* you lose your scholarship, one or the other.
    Period.
    End of story.
Fair or not, if this was implemented across the board, you MIGHT see the stupid acts start to go down - in about 5 years.
Sure, you will run into some bad deals like the Duke Lacrosse team, but what do you do ?

True, but there lies the problem as well. The pocketbooks of the universities won't likely tolerate such a plan, even though it would serve for the greater good of the game and the athletes. Unfortunate.

The old "defend your woman" thing ended at the street portion of the fight, the fact that he took it beyond that and gathered his teammates is the embarrassment. it also shows he couldn't defend his gf apparently. I think its a good move for the team. Let them be held to the same standards and then some, why not if sport athletes are held in such high esteem nowadays I think they should be held to standards of the same credibility. .....or do we need more Vicks ?

Knowing how hard it is to get plates relating to the team, I give you kudos on a great plate!

And for Dubai Vol - post a picture of Neyland next to Dr. Cosgrove's coach and see how many people correctly identify each one ;) Not discounting Neyland, but he is at least a dozen spots on the all-time greats list behind Paterno, Bowden, etc.

(and please don't call me an absent-minded one-team fan, it's just a statement. I LOVE college football, especially programs the caliber of Penn State, Tennessee, Oklahoma, etc. It's the only subject I can read history on and not fall asleep. Do I love to beat Tennessee? As much as you like beating Bama;) But I love to watch great football, and that means when UT's on, I watch)

It might - IF the big private financial boosters get behind it as well.

The thing is, if you don't play, and you are 'pro material' - you are no longer pro material.

The thing is, the Pro leagues need to get on board also: you have a troubled past, we won't take you.

It just seems odd to me that seemingly ALL Universities are dumping hundreds of millions into athletics... and I'm old school. If I had my way, each school would have a head coach, and about 5 assistants - and NO coaches in the press box calling plays down. Let the guys play on the field.

Kick the kid(s) off the team for fighting or suspend them for however many games they feel is correct. Forcing the entire team to pick up trash is an easy way out. Urban Meyer down here at UF had to kick off a few players this past off season for being dumbasses off the field. Go Gators! Go SEC!
