Does anyone know the weight of these parts: Stock Seats (adjustable omp seats in now are 30lbs each, looking at 12lbs seats to put in instead) Stock Wheels (have 355 wheels now, anyone know the weight difference) Stock Exhaust (verse Tubi in now) Stock Cats (verse none in now) Exhaust Heat Shield (verse none, works fine) Other low weight parts would like to get: Front bumper (they going to make that CF one?) Rear Bumper (what type of savings for the cf front and rear bumper covers?) CF roof panel would be sweet for TS Added weight: Brembo GT big brake kit upfront (verse stock)
Stock rims are around 50lbs. and challenge rims are closer to 30lbs if I remember correctly. 18 in. Michelin PS2's are 5lbs/tire lighter than same size Goodyear F1's. Challenge front and rear bumpers will save you about 200lbs.
C'mon that is ridiculous wight for just the rim. I am expecting the stock rim to be around 28lb and the Challenge to be around 20lb.
I saw a Mosler car recently that had 20" diameter, 12" wide CF wheels that weigh 17 pounds each. I'll try to remember to look up the mfr. BT
Yep, accelleration-wise, worth .2sec 0-60, like 30 extra hp. Let's see....faster cornering, less gas.....heck, you oughta get a tax credit for that!
My memory is going. Maybe it was 50lbs with tires. I do think I saved 10lbs per wheel with the challenge rims. I wrote it down when I messured and can't remember where I put it.
I think most of the savings is minus the structural part that is the 5mph bumper. So my understanding is the challenge bumpers are just the shell bolted to the frame. They are still fiberglass and not CF. CF would/should save even more weight. Unless you are racing I'm not sure 200 or 300 lbs makes a whole lot of difference though.
I'm guessing 200lbs out of the 348 would make a significant difference that would be felt on any twisty road or the race track. Of course losing that much may mean sacrificing air conditioning and the audio system, which may not be the significant difference everyone wants.
bumpers are not really 5mph. but the frame structure is. You can gut out the bumpers to get to the challenge weight which is basically the old bumpers without the metal bars integrated into the bumpers from behind. They did the same trick on the 25lb TS roofs which can be wittled down to a roof skin for about 2 lbs!

The power to weight ratio is changed considerably. 200 lbs is 6% of the weight of the car. If you don't believe 200 makes a big difference, put a fat chick in the passenger seat and see if your car isn't slower and handles poorly in the curves.
Ok, I'll be down 84Lbs just in seats alone. So how much lighter are the 355 wheels compared to the 348 wheels? Anyone have the 355 weight per wheel? Anyone weigh the tubi exhaust compared to stock? My goal is to twiddle it down nicely under 3000lbs and still have wool carpet and leather
I'm not sure if you misread my post, but in any case I'm in full agreement with you. The power to weight improvement is nice, but even more enjoyable to me is the improved cornering. I haven't lightened my 348 yet but I've taken out over 200lbs on another car and it makes it dance (in a good way!).
Tex, FBB, Plgzit...IMO you guys are dead on target for making your cars handle and accelerate.....dropping weight is the easiest,quickest, and cheapest way to get faster acceleration and much much better handling. 1kg of unsprung weight = 15kg...i.e. if you drop 8lbs from wheel/tire/lug bolts per corner the car will handle and respond as though you had removed approx. 480lbs.(8lbs=120lbs x 4 wheels=480lbs)....pretty amazing..
Do you happen to know the basis of these numbers. I'm not challenging them, just trying to understand how to arrive at them. I know that a unit mass removed from a wheel or tire will lower the vehicle mass and the polar moment of inertia of that wheel or tire. It seems to me that it would depend stongly on where on the rotating mass it was removed from.
This is common knowledge in racing....I learned this from F1 designer and legendary engineer Lee Dykstra when building a car that he designed for the WSC LeMans event in 1981. When I bought my 348 the first thing I did was strip out the audio system. It didn't have a subwoofer but it did have a large Eclipse amp mounted on the forward panel of the trunk. Between that, the speakers and the long wire runs I'm sure it added up to 40lb.
