Has anyone replaced leather on upper part of dash board? Is it glued on all the way, or just the flipping is? The leather, right above the airbag door is wrinkled. My girlfriend thinks I am a compulsive fixer... but I also noticed that my watch has put scratches on left side door handle leather... no, I dont think is complusive behavior, just love my toy and anynone´s input is greatly appreciated. Thanks
I highly recommend replacing the dash leather, as it brings the interior back to life. Pretty sure it was glued on in most areas. I removed the dash myself, and took it to a high end upholstery shop. Wasn't easy to remove though, and spent about 3 hours removing, and almost another 3 hours putting it back. Before and After: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Of course I painted the grills. Couldn't do all that work and have rusty metal on it! With the dash out, I removed the mesh and lightly sandblasted it clean. Some light coats of semigloss black brough them back to life. The dash now looks like new, as it should. No good reason to live with cracked leather and sticky controls.
Wow, one advantage to Seattle, you rarely see those kinds of problems. While it is rainy here, it is very low humidity. So no rust like that on the grills. I do literally soak my dash three times a year with Leatherique Rejuvenator Oil, and let it soak in for 24 to 48 hours. This "ounce of prevention" is because I drive my car all the time during the spring/summer, and when parked, the sun is hitting that dash....no signs of shrinkage or drying anywhere. Great repair/restoration!! Keep it moisturized with some sort of leather treatment and you should be good for years to come.
Thanks, I'm trying to fix every single little detail and imperfection on the car. Wish I could do paint myself too. I use Lexol clean and the conditioner for the leather on my cars. Seems to be good stuff, and protects it well.
Pull it and send it to GAHH. Send all of it at the same time, dash upper, incitement binnacle and airbag. This will allow them all to match and the leather they use is perfect. Less than 1500.00 USD if you do the work. Really makes the car once done. They can't put the "airbag" impression in the airbag leather. The leather is simply glued on throughout the car. If you have small scratches use leatherique dye to recolor it. It will make a huge difference for minimal work. Thereafter use their oil to keep it in good shape. When you replace the instrument binnacle make sure that you orient the felt covered clip under the front in a way that will not cause the front edge of the binnacle to be pushed up off the dash. ken
I had them do the upper dash only. Cost was $500, and it matches the instrument cluster and airbag perfectly. Might have been $1,500 if they did the removal/installation.
They charged me 600.oo for the upper dash so your right, less then I remembered. It is money well spent.
Who is GAHH and where are they located? How long did it take to do the repair and what company did you use to ship the dash? Thanks- CM
GAHH.com Talk with Jack, the turn around time was less than 7 days. I packed it up myself in a thick cardboard box and got adequate insurance via UPS.
