The Speed guys were all excited about the next four GPs being aired by their mother station Fox, but I just don't see why: - For one there is a real risk anytime one of the big networks carries something nichy like a GP it gets overwritten by a national "crisis" like a JFK Jr. plane crash etc. - Did I hear that the French and British GP will be aired delayed? And they think that is a good thing? Well, that's just great. No TV, internet, FChat etc for me that day then. I guess the only "good news" is, that the races go to Fox and not to CBS.
that 14.99 in car coverage sounds interesting. i hope they don't have some nitwit nascar announcer blabbering about how the cars are going the wrong way. we shall see.
You hit the nail on the head here - I will have to wait and see how Fox is before I make a judgement but I have a feeling it will not be very good. I doubt they can get more talent to broadcast the race than Matchett and Hobbs. Anyone know who the commentators are going to be? Please god not Daly, Varsha, DeBruhl, or Townsend Bell. Anyone but any of them!
The whole point of being on Fox is to collect the non-Speed racing crowd, and that's not going to happen at 5 AM.
Speed also is slightly delayed by approx 5-8 minutes at least for the Monaco GP and the practice/qualifying runs. I don`t know whether this is a signaling sending problem or forced because of security issues or for that matter if it also affects the GPs in other countries.
This is the case with all the races - it's called commercials. Carol I can't make any judgement especially on USGP since we'll be at LeMans. I am glad to see that Speed is providing coverage of 17.5 hours of the 24 for those who are unable to attend the historic 75th running. Thank you Speed TV.
Its always a good thing to have them on a network other than Speed, because it creates more visibility for the sport. Very few people watch speed, other than NASCAR fans, many people watch Fox and will probably watch a few laps of an F1 race when flipping through the channels.
I understand your point but I wonder whether that does much for the sport here. I mean if you haven't heard of F1 so far, when will you wake up or become a fan? Speed TV is pretty prevalent on cable and who is left in this country without cable? Without trying to stereotype too much, those without cable or satellite dishes are probably not in F1's target market to begin with.
Watching Live Timing on F1.com seemed to be simultaneous with Speed TV from Monaco. Maybe both were delayed???
Dose'nt Fox own Speed. That's why I thought Varsha was pumping it up so much. If so, you'll get Hobbs, Varsha, and Matchett.
I woke up and became a fan after I watched my first GP, I knew a few drivers and knew about Ferrari. I'm sure there will be plenty others like me that just don't know about it and will discover it on Fox. I'm also surprised at the number of people that don't get Speed, even with the millions of channels they get.
That's what I thought. It will be OK. I don't think they could do to an auto race what they do to the news.
This is 100% confirmed. We're getting our usual Speed crew on Fox. I think it's going to be great for viewers, since these guys don't force anything... Particularly about trying to "educate" the viewers on F1. That's where all the other efforts fell flat. They just call it how they see it. And honestly, this group is quickly becoming my favorite of all the F1 crews. My prior favorite was held by the old ESPN2 group with Posey, Hobbs, Varsha and Daly. I hope Hobbs brings his "A" game, because if he does, the non early morning crowd will get a real show.
Yes. Who was the guy who reported from the pit lane with his shirt collar always up...Brian (?) Borgnano (sp?) or something. He was a hoot. A clown, but a hoot. The good old days for sure.
I became a Formula 1 fan when I first saw it on tv. I had heard about it, knew a little bit, but didn't realize how exciting it truly was until I tuned in. Won't hook everybody, but there are plenty of people that will see it for the first time and fall in love.
I don't have a problem with Fox broadcasting the races, as long as we have good commentators. Watching F1 in HD sounds pretty cool, too.
Glad to hear that. I'm still concerned about the local Fox affiliate to replace the race with whatever local events they think are more important, such as a fly in Michael Jordan's soup or a local walk for charity.
Hopefully nothing like that happens on a Sunday afternoon, and it's good to hear we'll have the speed crew doing the commentary. I'm not too upset about the tape delay as lately I haven't been up at all hours to watch them live, but for those that are I do feel bad for them because the live timing online really does add alot to watching the race.
I think there are lots of people who have heard of F1 but hgaven't really been exposed to it. With interest in NASCAR on the decline it just might interest some disgruntled fans and exposure on Fox is a great way to showcase the sport for younger viewers. I wonder if Fox shouldn't have premiered their broadcasts with Monaco, the most colorful of a F1 races if not the closest racing. I first became interested in F1 after seeing the 1960 GP of Monaco on ABC'd Wide World of Sports.
