As I wait one more day to pick up the new toy, I was wondering if anyone has put a 355/360 motor in a 348? (I know blasphemy, and I apologize to the purists) If the 355 motor/block is the same, can't one just slap on a new set of heads? (and of course all the other intake/electronics that go with) There is a 360 motor for sale on the ad page. I'm sure others have looked at this already. Just curious, seems a lot cheaper than twin turbo set-up, Scott

    Flame suit on! ;o)

Nope. The closest to that would be the 355 throttle bodies Plugzit has on his car. Though there is a 308 running around with a 355 engine in it. If I'm not mistaken it's twin turbo charged too.

We figured that it makes no senes to do a 355/348 swap since the motors really are not the different in the end. Yes they have the 5 valves and 8 tbs, but it's considered an evolutionary step. Excelsior has the 308/355 turbo swap I believe. He's considering a 512TR transplant into his 355. Power junkie...

The 355 and 360 motors have 6-speeds to you are talking drive train swap. I can't see the reason given the cost. You can just save the cash and sell your 348 for a 355. Now it makes much more sense wringing out more output from the 348 motor.

The factory left a bit of untapped HP on the 348 IMO :)!

I hear you guys, and I understand the cost issues with a swap. So what ways can you up the power from the stocker? I have seen, cat delete, different exhaust, different filters, chipping. With all of these, you might see what, 50hp more? (and not sure about the chipping, consensus so far is that it doesn't give much increase for the money) Are there larger cams? I guess you could bore it out, but now you have really gone into the engine. Any other suggestions besides twin turbos. The turbos seem VERY expensive. Scott

A freeflow air cleaner and Exhaust should add a bit. Pap gained over 18 RWHP with his X-ost brand muffler. :)

Yup. Well, to be fair, the factory shipped some 348 Competizione's to Michelotto with 360 hp, changing only the chips (and substituting the F-40's half-shafts) and exhaust.

In turn, Michelotto bumped up more than one 348 CLM to as much as 550 hp.

Michelotto dumped the factory black u-tubes into the air intake and went with larger MAFs (as well as more agressive chipping). One such 348 had the 2nd fastest time in class at Le Mans in 1994.

None of the above were turbo-charged.

So there is more hp potential left untapped in most stock 348's. You want a free-er flowing exhaust, straight air intakes, larger MAF's, larger intake plenum, larger fuel injectors, and more agressive Motronic software (e.g. ignition advance, fuel/air ratio).

Individual throttle bodies or at least larger throttle bodies would also be a plus.

Same cams. Same cam/valve timing. Same block. Same stroke. Same pistons. Same fuel pressure. Don't touch the core of this beast. Just add more air, more fuel, better software, and more ignition timing advance.

Group77 also has a neat 348 trick with the ridiculous 90 degree bends in the fuel lines going up into the fuel filters that's worth stealing.

Can you get 550 hp out of a 360 motor without turbo-charging/super-charging, or nitrous?

...because you can get 550 hp from the 348 motor with simple bolt-ons. That's what ran in the 348 at Le Mans in 1994.

 with the same engine internals (rods...) as production 348's?? Did they use the same intake manifolds??

For 24 straight hours at Le Mans 1994 (2nd fastest qualifying time, 4th place in class).

...that's probably more than 3600 miles of redline driving.

These beasts can handle it. They're tougher than most of their owners.

The 348 CLM engines used intake plenums that look suspiciously like the 1995 355 (as well as have 8 individual throttle bodies like the 1995 355's).
