Well, against all better judgment I went and did it. I am now the (hopefully) happy owner of this Mondial:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120116759675

The seller (very nice guy btw), emailed me back this morning with thorough answers to all my questions along with some more detailed pictures that cleared up a few questions I had. However, he left our of the email WHEN the last service was done, only stating that it was 3K miles ago. So I FINALLY got a free minute at work this morning, pull up the ebay ad, and called him up with five minutes to go in the auction, trying to decide if I should bid. No answer. I leave a quick voice mail. He calls back with 50 seconds left in the auction. Before he gets through saying hello, I blurt out "when was the last service done!?" He says "a year and a half ago"....32 seconds left in the auction...I say "do you have records to prove all that?"...he says "yes of course"....12 seconds left....I bid....auction ends...I say "I just bought your Ferrari!"

So what we have here is an unmolested 1981 euro Mondial 8 with 53K miles, serviced about a year ago. A goodly pile of old records. All electricals work. Reportedly runs and drives nicely. Leather looks very nice in new pics, headliner looks good, carpet decent, but I will probably change to red carpet just because I think it looks so good with the crema leather. And, of course, red paint. All for $14,500.

Not sure if I will have the car shipped of if I will do the manly thing and fly out and drive this 26 year old handbuild Italian exotic across great expanses of desert from New Mexico back to Mississippi. however this all turns out, it will make for some good f-chat drama to keep everyone entertained!

    Congrats!

Grab a friend and drive it back. Publish your route and you'll be surprised how many Fchatters will be on the way. A buddy of mine did this last year with his "new to him" Mondial 8 (see "1700 miles in a Mondial")

If you pass through Dallas, I'll buy ya an adult beverage of your choice :D

Congrats Nathan! I was proven wrong - I was sure it was a scam and decided not to bid. Sounded great, but the owner never emailed me back. How the heck did you receive emails from him? I left two emails over 5 days ago without a response, so I was disinclined to bid on his, I mean, your car!

Congrats again on what looks to be a beautiful Mondial!

Oh, the lenses are out there - T. Rutlands has them, various used parts sellers stock them, and I have seen them on ebay now and then. Being that this is a GTS, I'd be concerned about the targa top 'fit' with the roofline to keep out water. I would LOVE to hear what happened to this car.....

The current owner performing his own maintenance doesn't scare me off. I'd still want to see receipts for the parts he installed. Of course, I wouldn't pay a premium since, the very minimum IMO, is that the timing belt and tensioner would have to be checked and/or replaced to assure that it's road worthy. Doing your own maintenance can save you a lot of money, but I wouldn't expect the next owner to take my word for it and pay a premium for a "fully serviced car."

I emailed this guy and asked him if he has any receipts for the eight grand in work and his response:

"gianni brode is mecanic he did the work he also replace new ac conpressor , include on $8,000"

    hmmmmmmm.........

Even with the new compressor, his ad notes: "Ac works good in the morning and at night, very poor during the day"

What do you guys think, 12K to 15K?

Well, I'd ask the seller to put you in contact with Gianni Brode so you can have a conversation about the car. The windows going up slow is nothing unusual and has been covered before in these forums (Clean out old grease, add a relay to draw power directly from battery, etc.) AC is not a strong suit for these cars, but to say that it cools in the morning/evening and not during the day might indicate low freon. The delaminating windshield is a concern though - that only gets worse with time and may require a new windshield. Factor in that the car has the least desireable motor and is not in a popular red/tan color combo (though that blue is beatiful on the Modial IMO), and I'd probably offer something in the $12 - 14K range. Maybe closer to $12K since there's no documented maintenance and, to be safe and sure, you'd have to get the timing belts and tensioners replaced at a minimum.

I would hope that English is not his first language because I'm not sure I would buy a car from a guy that constructed a sentence like that!

you guys seen any new cheap cars pop up... ? if my 911 sells to this guy this week, i will have nothing to play with.

maybe i should buy those 2 Lamborghini Espadas that have been sitting? :)

also, what the hell is up with all the nosebleed prices on 308 cars on ferrariads?

i sold my clean 77 GTB for $29k out the door and it was gone as soon as i dropped the price. many of these $35k plus cars have been on the market forever. hell there have been higher miles QV's that have sold in the mid to high 20's.

we will see what happens as time marches on, and all of these 30 + year old 308s with sodium filled valves that have never had valve jobs start blowing up.

look at how many 0f the 206/246 cars have had their engines done, some of them TWICE...

but they are worth $$$$ now so its "worth it".

i may get a gt4 for fun its its had a valve job, or if its around $15k or so.

anybody here know the valve sizes?

i would like to see what stainless steel valves run in sets.

Replacement stainless valves are a Ferrea "off the shelf" p/n and some of the favorite fchat parts suppliers carry the stainless part for a reasonable price.

    Edit: there 1.650" dia

You're not going to find one you'd buy for anywhere near $15k. Those days are gone now.
