We all know the good stuff about the F40 and F50 But what about the bad points? I am considering buying one of these. I've driven an F40, but I've not driven an F50 or seen one running. I loved the F40 and thought it an amazing car. However, it did have a couple of negative points: 1/ I am not really a fan of turbo power delivery i.e. the sudden surge of torque 2/ Whilst the engine popped and banged nicely, the actual exhaust note was "industrial" and IMHO sounded worse than my Tubi decat 348. What are the bad things about the F50? Any other key negatives about the F40? Also how is reliability of each car's engine? Thanks
The turbo's have a big muffling effect on the exhaust note of the 40. The 50 is a very nice, fairly flat torque curve and when equiped with the full Tubi system has an incredible sound. Every aspect of the F50 engine was quite impressive. It was built as a sprint engine and not a high mileage engine. The use of Morse type cam chains on hardened cam gears was the only wear concern I found while dealing with an engine failure. The failure was traced to a spun rod bearing caused by debris left between the cap and the rod durning initial assembly. Even at that it lasted 14K miles. At this mileage there was evidence that the cam gears were starting to chip away the case hardening due to the design of the chains. A morse chain is quite effective in a sprint application but requires softer gears for a long life. Air intake system has to be reworked for better sealing at both the plentium and the filter box. Easy fix. Dashboards were a problem when new and are not getting better with age. The upsides to the 50 are far too numerous to list. Combine the gear noise with the full Tubi system and the sounding effect of the carbon tub and I cant imagine anyone not liking it. Keep the door pockets full of disposeable ear plugs. Dave
The only difficult thing about my F40 is the long front overhang which makes entering driveways challanging. The engine side of the rear cockpit window is a bit tricky to reach in order to clean it (not the lexan decklid engine cover, but the rear window directly above the firewall). That's it. The car is FANTASTIC!!!
I'm pretty sure it wasn't. You can tell the difference just by looking. The factory one has that ugly manifold and heat shield, etc. What's bad about the F40 and F50? That depends on what you consider bad. You just mentioned the one thing about the F40 that most people consider one of its better qualities, and you think it's not that great. I think if you're teetering between buying one or not because of issues like that, you might not be totally happy with one. If you aren't totally and completely sold on an F40 or F50 before you buy one, regardless of costs or preconceived "bad" points, you might not ever be sold. And those are cars that require total commitment, in all aspects of ownership. I'd buy one with the paint falling off and still think either was totally insane.
F50 never came with Tubi from factory. Do you remember Scott's F50 Tubi system? Ferrarifixer fitted that complete Tubi exhaust to it. I have the pics, but I better not post pics without Scott's permission. They are cool pics too. Great looking Tubi exhaust.
Yeah, i remember that. Took ferrarifixer, abit of work to get them fitted, not just a simple bolt on mod... I've got the pictures too. They're such an intriguing car, and amazing that they can be split in half to be worked upon..
What's bad with the F50? I understand it's very loud in the cockpit when the roof is on. That was according to 360C (the guy with the yellow F50 in Australia). There's also the fuel bladder issue that needs to be taken care of very 10 years. Sometimes the paint layer is too thin and the wear is more noticeable up close. Like Simon said, ground clearance can be an issue in the F40. The F50 and Euro F40s have the lift system in the front that helps reduce this problem. The F40 is actually not that loud in the cockpit. Simon and I could talk normally over the engine while cruising at highway+ speeds. It does get nice and loud when it's given more throttle.
Definitely! They've always been my favorite F-car - the last super Ferrari to have a proper manual tranny.. One bad point about them in Australia at least is that they cannot be registered unless you get a 28 day permit Maybe if that stupid rule was not around we would see more of these amazing cars on the road.
360C wroteup the install in this this thread - well worth reading with great photos. Have to say I was not a big F50 fan... until this thread Jas - you may find answers to your original questions there as well. Good luck with your search and decision!!
For some cars that are not able to be registered in Australia - you can get a 28 day permit that allows you to drive them on the roads for 28 days of the month. (In Victoria at least) They cost around 150 dollars and can be difficult to obtain. 360C had one for the Melbourne leg of the 60th anniversary Ferrari parade. My mate also got a 28 permit for his Wrx STI type R.A a while back
Here in QLD, you can only get day permits from a certain time and a certain route of travel ect.....NO cruising around sadly with this permit. Not that hard to get, but only lasts for the day and I think they cost around AU$100+ now too.
