OK so my dad needs a new car to replace our 2005 Mini Cooper - the concrete suspension finally got to him! We're looking for a car with a bit more practicality, but still somewhat fun.

I've come up with these two options:

    1. 2007 VW GTI 4-door (fast ,fun, practical)

    2. 2007 Saab 9-3 Aero (fast, CHEAP with dealer incentives, more practical than the GTI, luxurious)

I know that we wouldn't be able to knock much off the price of the GTI, but saab's giving away a 3000 dollar cash incentive on all new 2007 models, and the 2008 facelift (ugly imo) will be coming soon.

Opinions? Which one would you choose?

Even with the $3000 discount you will still get a....... Saab.

That $3000 will look laughable when you experience the wild rush of unbridled depreciation...it will be breathtaking.

    Get the V-Dub.

Neither..drive a Subaru STi, a Mitsubishi EVO a MazadaSpeed 3 and 6 and an Acura TL...after driving all 5 I have decided to go with soon to be released EVO X, but all of the others are fine automobiles that perform well and will give you a MUCH more reliable car than either the Saab or VW...

Sad really I had the 9/3 two weeks ago for Media stuff and it is a nice car if you can get past the TURBO FRONT WHEEL DRIVE AUTOBOX HOP
It brought back many memories of torque steer. The resale terminal velocity issue is the big one.

The 9-3 is actually fine for reliabilty. 2003's were horrible but those problems seem to be worked out. The chassis is good, nice car overall. However, I agree with the others - you have to be willing to take the hit on depreciation. $3000 back helps but you might be able to work it more.

You might want to see if you can work a deal for a Mazdaspeed 6. It's a slow seller, probably only because it's more of a GT than a stoplight racer like the STi or EVO.

Just checked, 9-3 is off the list, and two more NOT being considered are the WRX or the Evolution. A bit too boy-racer for my dad.

He likes the TL, but they are extremely common where we live. He wants something a bit different.

Go with the GTI, it's a great car for a daily driver. They're a lot of fun, and if you want an automatic for city driving the DSG gearbox is the best there is by FAR!
