Just wondering about the most cost effective horsepower upgrades for these cars.

The 3.2 uses a Bosch K-Jetronic injection system. It's more of a distributed carburetor than a modern injection system. There's not really a central chip to replace.

Nope... no chip without replacing the digiplexes to something more modern like an Electromotive XDI.

Even if you went to a newer ECU, you wouldn't gain much. Ferrari tuned the 4V engines up about as much as the K-Jet would permit. Big win is either a supercharger, a full EGI conversion, or retrofit Webers - neither are cheap optoins.

Webers are probably the simplest and least expensive at about $3 - 4K - it goes up from there.

Check out my EFI install here: http://www.employees.org/~fty/efi/efi.html
As previously posted, not for the faint of heart ..

When finally done, it's *wonderful* and if you add any more stuff (like a blower) the computer deals with it.

    cheers,
    - Frank

VERY impressive! Would love to hear your driving assessment once it is tuned, and especially any dyno numbers.
    Very well done!

have you considered just putting a better free flowing exhaust on it. I have a friend with a gtb 88 model that Did Hyperflow cat and Tubi and took the car to a Dyno and it registered 290. Up from the stock 260.. Just an idea...

    Also not faint of wallet

Hey Jay, Would it be possible to post your friends dyno chart. I have the same set up as your friend with a new K&N air filter installed on my 87 328. Thanks, Lee

Thanks - It's pretty well tuned now. A little rich at higher RPMs which is not really a bad thing - err on the side of rich as a lean mixture can cause damage.

Getting the "volumetric efficiency" table right has been tedious and will be nearly a never-ending process, depending how picky you want to be.
What's most noticeable is the improvement in torque and smoothness at lower RPM - the "drivability" of the car is much improved. I will hopefully get a chance to dyno at the end of the summer. The car has a Stebro exhaust and K&N filter as well.

If anyone that's interested gets out to Eastern NC (Raleigh) give me a shout and I'll be happy to demo. I've been driving the car nearly every day this summer, so have a lot of miles on the new setup.

    cheers,
    - Frank
