I’ve been searching the forum about the factory speakers, and all I see made mention of are the door speakers and the tweeters in the dash. Nothing about any rear shelf speakers. On my 328, I have two small speakers mounted in these little boxes covered in a material that looks like the factory original stuff, except with red accents running through it, as you can see in the pictures.
Now, did someone in the car’s life just do a really good job of building tiny little boxes and covered these things as an add-on, or is there some sort of factory option that could have gotten you these speakers? The foam insulation on the inside of the box pictures feels and looks 21 years old, so they aren’t any recent addition. The speakers are Sony, so maybe that might give a clue.
Or are they on everyone else’s cars, and I just haven’t noticed them?

The reason I’m asking, is that I’m about to replace the speakers, and if this is a prior owner aftermarket job, I want to ditch them. Otherwise, they’re part of the upgrade as well.

As far as I know, rear shelf speakers were not an option. Looks like someone added them, and tried to use factory cloth as a blending device, even if it doesn't match the fabric in your car.

I believe someone put them in there. I have a similar setup in my car but not as nice. I am looking to change my speakers also and was trying to figure a way to install the speakers and at least yours looks clean.

Not stock. 328s didn't have shelf speakers from the factory.

The fabric is the same as the shelf/headliner of a car with a red interior

    Someone else put them in.

That is actually a neat looking idea - if you make the material match.

Yes, I thought so as well. Whoever did it did a really nice job.

Well, that answered my question, they come out!

And I'd like to once again thank all you F-chatters for putting up with a newbie’s incessant question. You all are indispensible, and VERY much appreciated.

    Looks nice!

So, how does it look with the covers on? How well do those small subs work? I bet the space going back on each side of the rear glass works fairly well as a small sub box.

I have two 10" JL subs and replaced all the factory speakers with JL ones, running on two JL amps in my Corvette. It's quite loud. ;) I'm not doing anything like that in the 328. In fact, it's at the audio shop in Baton Rouge right now. I'm having the same guys that did my 'vette replace the old head unit and both door speakers and dash tweeters, as well as get the antenna working. I should have it back tomorrow.
