I was wondering if somebody could explain to me what is an SAT exactly and if it is possible to do an online test. Also what's the best online IQ test?

    Thanks.

The SAT is the "Standard Aptitude Test". It is a test that is designed to try and measure a student's problem solving capabilities in math and english. They have also recently added a section for essay writing to try to gauge the student's ability to write coherently. SAT scores are used by virtually every college/university as a criterion for admission (ones that don't use the SAT will most likely use ACT scores, the second largest standardized test).

If you want a most likely better and more accurate description, go to www.collegeboard.com for more info. That is the website of the organization that administers the SAT.

I know for sure that you cannot take the actual test online. However, there may be a few online practice tests available at such websites as www.kaplan.com or www.princetonreview.com. You will most likely have to purchase the online tests, so buying a review book from one of these will most likely be the most cost effective, as these will generally come with several practice tests. I just checked Kaplan... and it seems that they actually offer a free practice test online.

As for an online IQ test... I've never actually heard of any online that are really accredited... there are plenty places that offer an "IQ test", but whether or not they are really accurate is up in the air.

The sat is a test to see how much money your parents can shell out to pay to tutor you and take one of the most worthless test ever that will determine your choices in college.

finding your IQ would be as simple as looking up your local mensa chapter and schedule a test. they used to do tests at caltech thru mensa. although you can only take the test once there are a couple of other alternatives however they are watered down.

Mensa is the most highly respected IQ test, if your into that kinda thing. It's the test all the nerdy types take to battle with each other :)

Interestingly, high SAT scores will get you into Mensa and will suffice in place of their standard IQ test.

Hmm, I tried some sample questions, I absolutely blaze all of them except for math, I am total dunce there. Would a University take into account your general score or will they look at individual components too?

Usually what happens is scores for individual components are reported; most colleges take the highest in each and combine (at least when I was applying to college four years ago).

About the IQ test; I'm wary of the scores reported there. It's not completely apparent that IQ tests actually measure "intelligence." They should ALL be taken with a grain of salt.

Not exactly, the SAT doesn't stand for anything now, it used to stand for Scholastic Aptitude Test, but when the collegeboard realized that it no longer tested intelligence they took away that name. The test consists of ability to do all types of math problems (mainly geometry and algebra), reading and analyzing paragraphs, correcting sentences, and writing a 5 paragraph essay. The test right now pretty much sucks IMO, it is entirely too long, 3:45 for the test itself, only has 2 sizable breaks, and it extremely repetitive. Now since they added the ridiculous writing section, the scores are weighted towards those with heavier english background compared to math, it used to be a 50:50 split now its a 66:33 split. Test costs like 40 something bucks to take, and adds on costs if you want to see which ones you got right and if you want to send it to more than 3 schools. The CollegeBoard claims they are non-profit, SURE THEY ARE.

+100, hit it on the nose, some kids pay tutors to be "taught" the SAT for 6 hours a week for months at a time. Or some rich kids pay other people to take the exam for them and get scores they couldn't dream of. Either way it is a very flawed system.

I did it but then then there was that stupid account form...had enough of those.

At this point, an IQ of 35 or so works fine for me.

The most accurate (I use that term loosely) IQ tests are administered personally, in a one on one session with a professional.

At least in my experience with my kids, each was given the test by a psychologist whose primary employment revolved around IQ testing. Not just to give raw IQ scores, but to also determine learning disabilities, etc.

I don't recall which test she gave. I think it was Stanford-Binet, or WISC, but it's been some time.

Any test given without observation and conversation about the test will provide a less meaningful score.

My wife gave IQ tests to people she interviewed while working for the FEDS. You'd be amazed at the IQ of some of the nastiest killers on the planet.

As to the SAT. It is supposed to be ok for a general measure or range score of IQ. Saw a chart that equated SAT scores and IQ. Don't remember the scales exactly. I do remember that my kids' IQs did not align with the SAT scores they got. And tutoring will improve SAT scores, I don't know if you can tutor and change a properly administered IQ test score.

On the other (darker) side - it might be of interest to look up the words "idiot", "imbecile", and "moron" or similar descriptive terms and relate them to the relative IQ scores for qualification.

I was suprised to find that these were actually "scientific" terms by the French psycho industry back in the 19th century and they studiously put down an IQ range for each.

I had to admonish some of my programming team to be more specific in the use of these terms for one another in the event of code errors - it seems they were just interchangeably calling each other one or the other without regard for the relative degree of stupidity.
