Just wondering how many 996 GT1s were produced and where they are? One of the most beautiful porsches in my opinion. Any information appreciated, thanks!

Well i was always led to believe there were 20 made, but when i was in St Petersburg, at the Festival of Speed the other week., the car on display had a sign saying one of 36 cars. So now im not too sure any more, but 20 is the number you usually hear about this car.Sorry that probably just makes the issue more confusing!

Interesting, thanks for the picture! I hadn't even heard that there were 20, but I think if anything, the plaque should be believed

When the red 993 GT1 was for sale in Du Pont, it said it was the only red one and 1 of 19. I'm not too sure of the numbers either.

There was only one 1998 GT1 street version made, about 2 1996 GT1s (the 993 style headlights), and many 1997s.

There were only 4 1998 GT1 racing versions and a lot of the 1997s again (over 11 by my count). A few 1996s (at least 3).

^Nice pics! Was that one for sale? I know there's at least another, if not the same, 1996 993 GT1 that's white for sale (with those Champion graphics, I'm sure you've seen it). Do you have those pics in hi-res that you could e-mail me? My e-mail is thanks!

Wow. With all due respect to the CGT (one of my favorite cars), the GT1 is the real Porsche supercar. The GT1 and the CLK-GTR are 2 of my favorite cars. Doesn't get much more exciting then a Le Mans race car with small compromises made so it can be street legal.

Cool, I didn't know there were 3 different years. I definitely like the 1997 design the best, but all are sexy!

Yes. This is not the champion car though (i think). This was the 2nd prototype built and the press car. Its the car that was in all the mags.

Perhaps the 36 quoted on the sign refers to road and race car production, because 20 is as i said the figure you usually hear about the car (996, 1997 version). Here are some pics i took at the event in St Petersburg, enjoy.

i just noticed the sign is wrong anyway it says thats a 1998 car when its a 1997 car, so i doubt the 36 claim also.

I like the fact that buried underneath is much of a production 911 platform!
And the dash is nearly standard production.

GT1's are all 993 series cars. There is no 996 GT1 per say technically.

The 993 front end was merely replaced by a 996 front end for marketing reasons.

One of my favorites all time P-cars ever.

And one of the best too!

I wouldn't trust wikipedia so much because anyone can edit it, but i believe 36 were made.

So how many of each?:) If wiki is right with the given number of 25 road versions, then that would mean that 11 racing versions were made?

Wiki says: "Regulations for the GT1 category stipulated that to be eligible, a total of 25 cars must be built for road use."

Edit: Oh, okay. Now I see what you mean.

I have pics of the following racing chassis:

    1996 style exterior: #001, #002, #003
    1997 style exterior: #004, #005, #006, #101, #102, #104, #105, #106, #107, #108, #109
    1998 style exterior: #002, #003, #004, #005

Those are just the ones I have pictures of (18), but there are more I don't have pictures of. I can't find pictures of the #001 of the 1998. Those were probably never raced and were only development cars as those were the two different generations of the cars. I also couldn't find #103 as you see above.

Looks to be 20 racing chassis according to this link: http://www.classicscars.com/chassis/grc/ChassisPorsche911.html

    Wiki is wrong again. ;)

Thanks a bunch for clearing that up.:) So there were 20 GT1 racing versions made.

Does anybody know how many street versions were made? Chassis records would be great.

    Would this be it? I guess that gives you a little bit of an idea of what they would sell for. http://www.theluxurycollections.com/automobiles/car_details.asp?AutoID={E24EB793-CFD0-468A-9CF3-3E4F5E49A74A}
Only that one is actually a 1997 model, not the 1998 model as it says. It was probably finished in assembly towards the end of 97' for them to list that.
