Animal control has been out a couple times in the last few years to the parking lot of my condo building and stray cats keep reappearing... and the fact that crazy old lady's sneak out at night to feed them isn't helping either.

Other than mixing rat poison into cat food, guns, or explosive devices... what is the best way to get rid of them?

Besides being evil, would cat food + rat poison be illegal?

Maybe you could mix cat food with syrup of ipecac (makes people puke). After that, I doubt they'll wanna eat the food.

That's a good idea. Maybe that would force them to go somewhere else looking for food.

Are the feral cats, or just neighborhood cats that folks let out at night ?

What problems are they causing ?

They might be doing some good if they are taking care of a mice problem you may not even know you have.

I'm going to take a WAG and say most of the prior posters have never had a cat as a pet, I have, and I do, and I don't know what I would do without them.

I'd try to find a way to trap them so the Humane Society can take them. Yeah, they may end up putting them down if nobody adopts them in a couple of months, but I can't even imagine poisoning or trying to kill an animal of any kind just for hanging around.

I am pretty sure they are 100% stray and they have been around that parking lot for years.

Only reason I am going after them is they sleep on the hood of my car, scratching the paint and leaving dirty paw prints. I'd rather not have to put a car cover on every night, thats a real pain. I wish I had a garage.

If any of the animal lovers get whiff of you trying anything mean then you're up shlts creek. I've used one of those electronic devices, "CatStop" with some good results. There's sprays and red pepper powder. It's tuff keeping the lil' bastards away.

Forget that idea. Humane Society won't take in ferals, trust me. (For those who don't know the lingo: a stray cat is a pet cat which has been abandoned by it's owner. A feral cat is the offspring of that cat, which has grown up on the street and is afraid of people.)

I've worked with the feral cat problem for several years, so I know a bit about them. Ferals are not tamable, and can never become pets. Nobody will take your ferals. There are a huge number of them in this country, more than there are pet cats in fact. Everybody else has the same problem you do. There is simply nowhere for them to go.

Frustratingly, evil or not, you idea to kill them won't work either. Neither by trying to poison them or by trapping and euthanizing them. You'll never get them all, especially with the 'crazy cat ladies' against you. When a bunch die off, they'll start to breed faster and you'll quickly end up with even more than you started with. It's the obvious thing to try, so it's been tried a million times before, and it just doesn't work.

There is really only one thing you can do, and you're not going to like it. You can control and slowly reduce their population by getting together with those 'crazy cat ladies' who feed them, and organizing a 'Trap, Neuter, Return' program where you trap the cats, get them fixed, put them back where they were, and allow the cat ladies to continue feeding them. This will break the breeding cycle and allow the population to slowly shrink away. You do have to remain vigilant however, as people who no longer want their pet cat will, trying to reduce their guilt, find your cared for colony and dump their stray there, possibly starting the whole cycle over again.

Now for the reason you're not going to like it, besides the fact that you can't have your way and have the cats gone immediately, is that it's *you* who are going to have to pay for the spay/neutering of the cats. A lot of vets and animal rescue organizations will help with training, trapping equipment, and low cost spay/neutering, but pretty much nobody will pay for it for you.

As I said before, everybody else has their own feral problem to deal with and so aren't going to come fix yours for you. Believe me, I tried to help as many people as I could, but between the crazy cat ladies saying, "But he's so cute, can't we just find a home for him?" and the people saying, "Just shoot them all already" and everybody saying, "But it's not my cat, why do I have to pay?" you get burned out really fast. Besides, it was only the people who took responsibility for their own neighborhood who actually managed to make any headway on the problem.

The only other thing that would work, is to positively remove any and all sources of food and water. That very occasionally works in a single family private home in the country, where you have direct control over all the people living there and there isn't any natural food sources about. But at a condo complex, forget about it.

Sorry to give you the bad news, but that's life.

Too bad there is so many irresponsible people out there not fixing their animals. Lots of orginizations out there that will trap and help adopt them into loving homes. It's not the cats fault. I have rescued and helped placed many. It kills me see innocent animals treated like weeds. Give em a chance...

I have 2 and they make the world a better place!

Poisoning animals will land you in prison, and rightly so.

Yeah, it really is. It's the fault of irresponsible A**HOLES who don't get their pets fixed, and create the whole problem for the rest of us to clean up.

What animals are predators to cats? I mean, most animals will avoid skunk smell - there HAS to be something scent spray he can buy that cats hate the smell of that isn't too bad to humans.
