I know a couple of people that I will trust to build it but they're both "out" for at least a week and a half. In the mean time, what recommendations can you folks offer?

I want at least two monitors, I want to store and run my video collection, create and edit videos and that's pretty much it. What would I need for the big 4?

    Processor

    RAM

    Video Card

    Sound card

And advice on monitors? Are LCD monitors as bad as LCD tv's with their choppiness with fast movement?

Are 2 20' screens too big/ too much juice to run?

P.S. I don't want vista. I'll stick with windows XP Home.

Top Notch huh? Here you go:

    Processor, Intel Quad Core: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115011

RAM, at least 2gb, something in the 800-1000 mhz, and name brand, like OCZ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227087

    Video Card, 8800GTX: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121033

    Sound card, X-Fi http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102005

You didn't mention motherboard but I'd say something like a Intel Bad Axe 2, you'll need a good power supply too, I like Silverstone. And get a decent heat sink for the processor that you know will fit.

2x20" will do fine, heck I'd maybe go for two 22". For reduced choppiness you want a lower response time, look for 5ms or lower, I think you can get as low as 2ms these days. LCD TVs are usually up around 8 ms. Obviously a CRT monitor doesn't have this problem since the ms is well below 1 ms.

    Thanks for the post.

Can I buy a computer equivalent to your specs or is it always better to have a computer built?

    Thanks again.

Dell, alienware, or voodoo pc is your best bet for a high spec machine prebuilt.

Most of what I have on video {cd/ dvd} is for Windows media player and I thought Mac's could play those.

    I had a personal Mac briefly, I ended up giving it away because I didn't use it much. {More time restrictions than not liking it.}

Gebus that has technology I haven't heard of. I know what to look for but not in terms of brand names and model numbers. {I'm not a computer builder.} I guess I'll have to wait a week and a half and get a lesson.

Thanks for all of the quick replies.

Next time you give away a mac, PLEASE PM ME FIRST :D

They can, there's this program called "flip 4 mac" that I used to use to play WMV's on my G5.

The reason I ask is because you can get a decent mac that'll fulfill your needs quite easily, where with a Windows system it's gonna be a nightmare, especially with things like that.

Get a Dual 2.5 Ghz G5 with 3GB ram at least and you're set. Some of them come with dual monitor video cards. As for the sound card I'm not really sure, never had to deal with sound cards in a mac as I used recording studio equipment.

I didn't know about the Windows program, I'll check into the Mac's.

P.S. The Mac toss was more of a reply to "are you even using that?" than a conscious decision to get rid of it... and she is sooo good lookin'. You would have done the same!

Just checked out the site and I don't know the differences between the model numbers for the different components. I'll have to wait for a pro to return.

    Thanks for the effort.

www.alienware.com - voodoo was more $'s for what was available, Dell XPS had a lot less high-end options (Dell owns Alienware now).

But $5k for a killer machine is always a bit of a pause.

    Arrrrrrgh

    How long can you wait?
Intel quad core QX6600 i think prices will drop to 266$/chip
    AMD's Barcelona's are almost out.

    Mac Pro's are so *hardcore*

If you are going to drop big bucks -- Mac Pro + ADC Discount = 20% off after you pay 99$ for the subscription. Works out nicely in the end. Get 2 30" display's while you're at it. = omg sweet. :)

I don't think I'll have to spend that much. Well maybe including the monitors and tax. Ahhhh but it's $5,000 Canadian so it's... like... free... eh?

XP Home might have processor limitations. Can XP home do unlimited cores / processors?
    I know Win2k vs Win2k server has core/processor issues. :(

It's midnight and I'm thinking of a way to get this computer built and delivered by 8:00am.

    I'm not into "waiting".

Just like a car, if I can't have it ASAGDP I'll grow tired of waiting/ wanting it and no longer want it. Ever see a child in a store clinging to a new toy and by the time he gets to the car, it gets dropped on the floor and forgotten? Yeah, that's me with everything.

I couldn't get a first year Elise brought into Canada due to Transport Canada's strict rules, I was told by Lotus to wait a year or two and after a few months I decided against the car and got something else.

If you are very price concious -- build your own box btw.
    You'll save thousands.
But tech support ... arrrrgh. Are you knowledgable about computers?

How many times in this thread have I said "I don't know"? Uhhhh lots!

Your last question has been answered in every post by me in this thread! ;)

I'm not too fussy on the price but if I can get it built for 3 instead of 5 and have pretty much the same machine, I'll go for the 3 and spend the other 2 on porn.

Make you own, not only will be quicker than having to wait for an order one, it will be cheaper and it will run much faster. If you want a really high spec computer you will end up spending thousand. I spent 7k on my current computer from dell, it was a huge waste of money.

VERY IMPORTANT!!!--- Make sure you use scsi hard drives. At least 10k rpm's, if you don't having all that extra power wont matter. If you don't mind spending lots of money and want the best possible performance go for "cheetah" drives, they run at 15k rpm's.

Is this common knowledge among computer builders?
