Kubica Update ( Possible Spoilers )

Robert Kubica will be released from hospital on Monday morning, having sustained just a sprained ankle and a light concussion in his violent crash today, his doctors confirmed.

The Polish driver crashed heavily on lap 27 of the Canadian Grand Prix, and was airlifted to the Sacre-Couer hospital in Montreal.

But despite widespread reports claiming that he has a broken leg, the hospital said Kubica has sustained minor injuries and confirmed he will be released after a precautionary overnight observation.

"Following the violent accident during today's Canadian GP, Robert Kubica was transferred by helicopter to Sacre-Couer hospital in Montreal," the hospital said in a statement originally issued in French.

"When he arrived at the emergency care unit Kubica was placed in the hands of Dr Ronald Denis, chief medical officer of the Canadian Grand Prix, and also head of the surgical department and trauma department at the hospital.

"Mr Kubica has been through all the necessary medical checks and there do not appear to be any serious consequences as a result of the accident.

"He is suffering from light concussion, as well as a sprained right ankle. He is in a stable condition and his life is not considered to be in danger.

"He will remain in hospital overnight for observation and his condition will be checked again tomorrow morning."



glad he's ok. but i don't think he'll be racing at Indy.

 

Thank Gawd for modern safety equipment. That guy really had his bell rung and fortunately it looks like no serious injuries.

 

What caused the concussion? The impact with the wall or the impact with the racing surface?

I think those roll bars with the air intakes should be 5 inches higher, style be damned.

 

i think the wall. he hit the wall twice i think.

i was really scared when i saw the accident. really reminded me of Senna's fatal crash. again, i think Senna's death saved someone's life, in this case, KUbica.

 

Carbonfiber tub saved his life.
However if it hadnt deflected away from the first concrete wall but instead was driven in at a more severe angle, the G's surely would have got him.
What ever happened to catch fences ?

 

When he hit the wall head on, I thought for sure he was gone!!

 

Martin Brundle pointed out that he was lucky not to have launched himself over the wall into the other side, the oncoming cars.

also, he was so so close to smashing into the parked Toro Rosso.

Very scary. I couldn't stay in my seat. Pacing. Thankfully he seems to be OK. Wonder if he has any memory of the accident. Frequently, there is no memory of such a traumatic event.

The view from Liuzzi's car as he navigates the debris field is pretty scary.

 

As I recall, catch fencing was done away with due to the danger of the chain link wrapping around the car and trapping the driver.

I think the only reason he survived was how he clipped a car just a little earlier, it put his car on an angle so that he didnt nail it head on and all the gs didnt just wreck his organs. tough crash. he really got airborn too

 

Seeing his feet sticking out the nose like that, i cant believe his feet are not damaged! He is very very lucky! If he had 1 more impact on the front he would of had no protection for his feet at all !!!

 

He only just missed the car of Scott Speed that was just standing there after his retirement.

The downside is that now they will alter this track to make it safer and a lot slower, this track along with Monaco is one of the best tests of a driver there is.

 

I'm very relieved to hear he's alright. Seeing the crash in person, followed by several minutes of almost absolute silence, was chilling, to say the least.

 

Thank God he is ok.

Lets hope for a speedy recovery and future success.

This accident stirred up a lot of old emotions. ( aka...Senna, RIP)

 

I'm glad he is OK. I was at the race and saw it on the TV. It looked really bad. We thought he was dead as they gave no updates to the crowd throughout the remainder of the race.

 

I agree with you. Additionallly clipping the initial wall with his front right suspension absobed enough energy so the subsequent impacts, although extremely violent, weren't as damaging as they could have been.

Seeing the pics with his feet out of the nose indicate to me that it could have been a TON worse if he hadn't impacted the first wall with the front right.

I am a racing fan so unfortunitly I have seen drivers die - Swede Savage was the first, Gordon Smiley, Dale Ernhart (I was at the race), to that day at Imola.

My girlfriend was making lunch and caters to my racing habit and when I saw it I stood up and helled an expletive.

She charged in and asked me what was wrong.

"I just watched someone die"

I CANNOT BELIEVE he survived that and basically walk away from it, did you see his helmet?

But NO UPDATES on his condition? It made me sick because when you don't hear anything you expect the worst.

Shame on you FOX!

 

Apparently he removed/threw the steering wheel out
before impact so he's likely to recall at least part of it.

Actually, I just looked at the photos posted in another thread
and it looks like the steering wheel is still in the car.
An international broadcast had mentioned that he threw
the steering wheel out before impact.
