    Hi all,

I have my 348 and 911 in a small garage where I pretty much have to start the car, move the car a few dozen feet and then stop it if I want to work on the other car, clean it, fix it etc.

I've heard that this is not good to do, so I try to avoid it as much as possible, especially when the car is cold, but sometimes that is impractical.

So my questions is, what are the real long term problems that starting a ferrari 348, backing it up for 30 seconds and stopping it would be if you did this maybe 2-3 times a week and during the same week we also to take it for a longer drive where it did come fully up to speed.

Should I be stressing about this? :)

In my own personal opinion, this would not harm anything in the slightest. The 348 seems to be very user-friendly, not prone to fouling the spark plugs, not requiring a lot of cranking to fire up, not refusing to idle, etc....

Well, its not the greatest thing to do for it, but there are other factors to consider. In the grand scheme of things, something else will have that motor out of the car long before any internal wear causes trouble, so I wouldnt lose too much sleep over it.

+1. I wouldn't lose ANY sleep over it. It's not HELPFUL for the engine, but it'll be more significant to the car's longevity if you're not gentle on the clutch during this process.

Only a flat battery from starting and stopping without allowing the alternator to top up your battery ;)

When you start your engine the mixture is rich and raw fuel will dilute your oil and is toxic to the catalytic converter. The products of combustion are CO2 and water. The water along with the raw fuel will dilute your oil. The water will also sit in your exhaust system and cause some rust. This is all negated when you drive your car for 30 minutes or more. The oil gets hot and burns off the fuel dilution and the water. And the exhaust system gets hot and boils off the water so as not to allow for rust.

If I need to move a car and it can be rolled back or forwards I will do the labor. If I push a car out of the garage to wash it I then pull it back in with the tow bar and a winch I have set up just for this purpose.

If I must start a car up I then take it for a drive. When somebody comes over and says to fire up the car I tell them we can take it for a ride (if time permits) but that I will NOT just start it up to hear the engine.
