    I have already asked a few of the well known drinkers here but though I would open it up a bit. Here is the deal, my grandfather is turning 80 in December my father and I want to get him some top notch scotch. This is a pretty common thing we do and have tried most of the usual stuff, Jonnie Walker black, blue, white. Chivas, Macallan, Glenlivet and most of the regulars have be hit before, I am looking to spend $300-$500 and want something aged like my grandfather and something of the mark or something rear and unusual. I dont need the 250 GTO of scotchs but maybe a nice low mile 512TR. Any ideas would be of great help. Thanks,

    I love the Islay scotches. Very smoky and peaty. When you're sipping it, you know it's scotch whiskey! Talisker and Laphroig are some good ones, but there are several.

    I like those as well. Lagavulin is another peaty scotch.

    Some people love these, but others hate them. Laphroaig is very peaty/smoky/oily.

    In order from mild to strong on the taste scale, I would say they are:
    1) Talisker, 2) Lagavulin, 3) Laphroaig.

    I like to sip the Talisker, but prefer Laphroiag with a strong cigar. :)

    I like The Balvenie Double Wood for a nice woody taste.

    MACALLAN 18yr old single malt scotch had a pretty good flavor.
    (I'll with hold any comments pertaining to 18y/o's and myself).

    I'm not a scotch fan, but love Canadian whiskey. How about a bottle of Crown Royal XR? Prices are up 30% since December, now hovering around $180/bottle.

    MUCH more refined and less harsh though if you get the 30yr. Laphroaig 30yr should be right around $200 a bottle and is really a lovely scotch. Add a nice pre-embargo cuban with it and you'll have the perfect recipe for a delightful evening.

    That sounds good. I like the regular, but the aged sounds even better!

    Give it a try. The aged(30yr and 40yr) are just completely different animals from the younger Laphroaigs.

    TX907 is right on here... Lagavulin is TOP notch.. the Laphroaig is almost a little too peaty for me. Love the Talisker too..
    on another note, i'm actually a fan of the Bowmore legend.. and its CHEAP

    Translation, don't leave the single malt scotches unlocked after you've already passed out with these Dallas dudes around. :D
