My neighbor just replaced his a/c units (2) and heater unit, at a cost of over $10,000. I asked him why all the expense, and he said the HVAC guy told him "You've got one A/C unit that's toast, and there's no telling how much longer this other one will last. Plus, it's a freon unit and we won't be carrying that much longer. As for your heater, it's not going to be compatible with the new A/C unit (for what reason I don't know).

My home has two heat pumps (one of downstairs, one for up), and two gas furnaces (one for downstairs, the other for up). If I lose a heat pump, can I not just replace it with a standard a/c unit? I hate the heat from a heat pump - I just use "emergency heat" so my gas furnace will turn on.

Are there compatibility issues that I need to worry with? Is the freon thing a lie? Can someone educate me on this?

Yes, it's at least bending the truth to claim you need a new system because of the phase out. R-22 (freon) is being phased out of new systems by 2010, but new R-22 will available for servicing old units until 2020, and recycled R-22 will be around for probably quite a while after that.
