Tribute to F1 Drivers Killed When Driving

You forgot Jim Clark (April 1968) and Ludovico Scarfiotti (June 1968).

How could anyone forget Jim Clark?

 

Nice job.

Not dead, but probably the most severly wounded survivor and somebody I have to think of once in a while: Philippe Streiff

 

Because he didn't die in a F1. There are many other great F1 drivers who died, but not on this list and I assume it is because they didn't die in a F1.

 

How about Pedro Rodriguez killed at the Norsring...

 

We might do a better job if everybody chimes in.

Denny Hulme, Didier Pironi, Clay Regazzoni, Mike Hawthorn, Bruce McLaren, Stefan Bellof, Manfred Winkelhock

Ok, we miscommunicated. I thought you were looking for other F1 drivers who died meanwhile. But you were thinking only of drivers who died in a F1. I think from that perspective your list is complete.

 

Mike Spence died in a Lotus Turbine car at Indianapolis, not in a Formula One car.

 

Ferrari 250 GTO thanks for the post, realized about Hawthorn as well. Don't forget Mike the Bike.

 

I think we should include all of the F1 drivers who were lost in various accidents before their time...Jimmy Clark sure should count, as he was just holding up the team colors in the F2 race.

Graham Hill comes to mind, private plane crash. We did mention Hawthorne, road accident? Maybe even James Hunt, early death from heart failure?

I think that it is safe to say we should remember all these fine people for their contributions, taking care to do this in good taste.

Why include just a few Indy 500 fatalities? O'Connor, Unser, Cortner, Spence? I know that the race counted for WDC points up until??? But these are not deaths in F1 cars (although Spence was an F1 driver). Not trying to be nitpicky or anything, but if you're going to include Indy, you would need to add quite a few more names...

 

Indy was part of F1 only in the fifties, however no F1 team really ever participated. Ferrari made a few efforts, but nothing serious and the results were dismal.

F1 teams (Lotus) participated in the sixties, but there it wasn't part of the F1 championship anymore.

 

All true. But, remember that Jimmy Clark actually skipped the Monaco Grand Prix to go to the 1965 Indy 500. He won in his Lotus - very much like an F1 car but with the suspension offset with unequal left and right linkages for the direction of the race.

Nothing much stopped Jimmy in those days.

 

Yup. And I always get an emotional kick out of the huge banners hanging on the outside of the IMS with F1 heroes who also won Indy: Clark, Fittipaldi, Andretti and Villeneuve

 

And, let's don't forget about Graham Hill...who singlehandly put Lotus team back together after Clark's untimely death in 1968.

That Lotus 31 that Clark used was the first rear-engine car to win Indy, and there has never been a front-engine roadster to win one since.

This nostalgia stuff is kind of addictive, isn't it - especially compared to the state of the 500 and F1 nowadays?
