i have a neat little switch in the luggage compartment of the 512tr which allows me to switch off the battery when i leave the car for longer periods. i will probably be buying a 456m next week, so does the 456m have such a switch?

    Yes.

Tried to get the pic, but couldn't.
    so
since the 456 GT[A] and the 456M GT[A] all share the same engine internals, except for the "M" has a different firing pattern boosting the HP by 6, I can safely assume, the M has a battery cutoff switch like the 456 GT[A].
On the 456, it is on the left side, next to the battery and has a turn knob, and of course the battery is in the front, engine, area.

I can concure with this, it's next to the battery and is obvious and well explained in the manual (that's a book not a transmission type!).

Just jumping on the back of Ross's question, does anyone know if the 550 has a battery cut off switch fitted as standard, and if so where it is?

Since the 550 and 456 share almost the same inner engine, I would say the cutoff switch is right near the battery, which is near the right firewall. Not sure, but would place some money on it.

small black round knob about 1.5 inches diameter, quarter turn clockwise and negative earth is disconnected from car.

Should be right next to battery - on my RHD 456 GT its on the nearside, between the battery and wing (fender).

ok, found the cut-off switch. thanks.
next question: if i ever do need to remove the battery to exchange it etc, how the hell do you get it out of there ! looks like you have to remove other parts to get at it ! and the instruction manual says nothing about this....

thats a helpful diagram (where did u get these anyway?), but it does not accurately depict the situation...the back edge of the battery is below and behind the hood lip against the firewall, and the front edge is below another part (cant remember what it is right now). does it slide out to the right side? or do you have to remove that part in the way?

is a decent on-line site for parts books. try it out.

this diag only shows the hold in battery part, not a pic of it in place. probably one there. PS: bought this manual from a guy off ebay [do a search] and it's really helpful, especially in the seat area.

I've never removed the battery, ALWAYS keep a charger on, since the Ferrari challenge at Infineon few months back left me and the wife driving the Mondial only.....rats, would have like to show Brad and Kevin the new wheels.
