Looks like a good chance he just went out of the race with a comprehensively blown engine. Nice picture though. Thanks for sharing, Tom W
Yep, from the Guards Trophy Race at Brands 1964, before the shinnanigans of bits being swapped and "replicas" being made, of which i believe is still somewhere in Italy.
thus far these are among the best pictures i've ever seen covering automotive subject matter; the thread is a treasure. very lush and hyper-addictive and generally awesome. keep this thread alive and well.
In the late 70's and early 80's I used to hang out at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin for the road races. I must have hundreds of pictures. I don't know much about Ferrari racing history so you'll have to help me here. Would any of the cars you guys are looking for have been at this track during the above time frame?
I always envisioned this thread to be a place where anyone could post "Old photos" that were fundamentally not part of the public domain. I love to see old snap shots, taken with a Kodak Instamatic or simislar, that have been sitting in a box or drawer for years. These are IMHO the undiscovered treasures we have to share! David p.s. Wayne Ausbrooks who monitors this thread I believe agrees with me.
Hi all, This seems to be the place to ask about photos... There is a photo on page 4 of the Cavelleria 250 GTO book. It is of the John Mecom #24 250 GTO at Sebring in 1963. I am trying to figure out what the sticker is behind the front wheel and under the Champion. This is for a restoration project of another car that had the same sticker. Cahier also has a phot in the Blumel GTO book on page 72. The photo is owned by Archivio Maniago - does anyone know how to get in touch with them? Many thanks, Steve
Sadly the photo won't magnify with sufficient resolution and the decal was long gone by the time I owned the car. However, Fly & GB Track produce a reasonably accurate model of 3987 in the Mecom colors including the decal you mention. Why don't you ask them? Their reference number is 88211-A1802. Their contact numbers are: Tel: 01282 864666 Fax: 01282 864777 or: Fly Car Collector Unit D2 Stanroyd Mill Cottontree Lane Colne Lancashire BB8 7BW Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks for your response. I have had good luck with original photos. The photos in the books do not have enough resolution, but often the original prints do. Most model manufacturers have been using a Valvoline for that sticker, but I am 99% certain that it is not that. I am also trying Cahier to see if I can purchase a copy of the photo you posted. Did you own a copy of the Maniago photo? When you got the car did it still have the third light built into the nose opening, or do you know what brand of light it was? I suspect that it was a Sebring add-on, and probably donated by Lucas, Hella, or one of the other light companies. The car I am working on also has additional running lights, and they may be the same type, and thus, the same sticker. Steve
I don't own a print of that photo though I would like to. The third light was long gone by the time I came into possesion of the car but all the marker lights remained including those on the roof. Have you thought to ask Roger Penske or John Mecom Jr. about this?
Yes, I talked to Mecom about it a few years ago. He didn't remember anything that specific about the car. I might try Pabst as well, though he only drove it the one time. Do you have any pics of the marker lights that were placed on the on the inside rear window area? I'll let you know of any info I can come up wth. Steve
Great photo! At first glance I thought....Daytona Cobra.... Then I looked closer. A GTO....even cooler. Tom W
This is one of my favourite GTO liveries. I think that Ralph Lauren owns the car now and it is red, just like most of the other GTOs. I'm such a sucker for any car in Mecom team livery. David (or anybody else), do you have any more photos of this car from the 1963 Sebring race? I saw one of your other photos where you were standing right in front of it and shooting the #25 Team Rosebud GTO. I also think you have one of the car on track - it's too blurry to see what the sticker is though. Thanks! Steve
It doesn't look like any light company sticker I'm familiar with. Maybe a sticker from an earlier race?
