I have confirmed that the model companies are using a Valvoline sticker in their representations of the car in this livery. Any reason they should have erred in this when every other detail is correct? Steve expressed a doubt about this.
I have been trying to figure out this sticker off and on for about 7 years. I am very sure that it is not a Valvoline. The Valvoline represents a 'best guess' on the part of the modelmakers. They know something goes there, and they know it is red and white. The Valvoline is close enough for their purposes. Besides, other than detail fanatics like myself, who is ever going to tell them thatthey are wrong? The sticker is on this Ferrari, a Corvette Z06 from the '65 Sebring race, and a 289 Cobra from another race. Both the Z06 and GTO had extra lights, I don't know if the Cobra did or not. It could be something other than lights, but I don't know what. Steve
Hmmm, surely if they were putting this sticker on a Ferrari of that period other race cars of that same period probably stuck the same sticker on ... thus has anybody checked the cars it raced against to see if there is a similar looking sticker, and there also might be a better photo of? Pete
David, Can I buy a copy of that photo from you? A real photo processed from the original negative or slide should be clear enough to read with my loupe, or scanned and blown up on my PC. I have been able to do this with other photos with a high rate of success, but I need a real photo to start with. This is by far the best photo I have ever seen of this. I live in Dracut, MA (a little south of Nashua). I have no problem drving up to pick one up if you are willing. I can even do the running around to get the photo processed if you don't have time. Thanks, Steve
Now we are thinking along the lines of what I said ... thus again have a look at other photos of OTHER cars and see if there is a similar looking sticker. If you are lucky the sticker will be clearer, or the car still has it. Its unlikely to be unique to this particular car ... think outside the square guys Pete
Do not trust Model cars "companies"... I know, I owe one! ;-) Lots of mistakes still live, especially if a "great name" made the mistake at first, as AMR did, adding two yellow border lines to 3705GT blue/white/red stripes... David, if I could buy also a copy, could be great. I'm now planning to make 1/24th decals for GTOs....
As I mentioned before, it shows up on 1 289 Cobra, and one 1963 Z06 Corvette. The GTOs team home was Texas, the Corvette and Cobra were PA and Ohio, respectively. The stickers were on cars two years apart ('63 for the GTO and Cobra, and '65 for the Vette. This is after a few years of looking. I also have a fairly good library covering Corvettes, Cobras, Ferraris, Astons, Maseratis, Alfas, Jags, MGs, and a bunch of other stuff. I also have a bunch of vintage magazines and have looked through all of them hoping that one of the ads might look like something. It does not show up anywhere but those three cars. Steve
What a shame ... gee this is a tough one then! Hopefully the internet will solve it as somebody might recognise it ... Pete
This is a picture of a 1/12 scale model I used to own of 3987. Unfortunately now sold so I cant check. Looks like Valvoline from the model Image Unavailable, Please Login
David, I understand about loaning the negs - can you make an 8x10 photo for me? CVS can do them just fine. I will be happy to pay your costs and for your time. The photo process usually gives a better resolution than most of our computers can - that's whay it is usually better to work from a photo. The owner of the Corvette and I would be very grateful if you could help us out with this. Thanks! Steve
Thank you Bertocchi for all your beautifull photos! This one is Le mans 1962. N°17 - 250GTO#3387GT N°28 - 246SP#0796 N°21 - 250GT#2643GT N°16 - 250GT#2819GT N°59 - 250GT#2445GT
Is car #59 a pf coupe by chance? Just looked at the pf coupe registry....it must be a SWB then? Pure oil had a sunburst looking logo, didn't it? Tom W
Attached is a hotlink to a larger format photo of the same shot. It may make the identifying process easier. Shot at 2007-07-08
Just a couple of old photos from my collection. Please respect the copyright. Usual questions. Not too difficult. Nathan Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hi Nathan, Thanks for posting the photos. Where/when was the photo of the 166 Spyder Corsa taken? Was it one of the Bamford cars? -Jarrett
Hi Jarrett The answer is that I haven't any idea. The photo is from my collection but not taken by me. Identifying the car isn't difficult (it's quite well known) but where and when the photo was taken is more difficult. Nathan
David, So is there any chance of being able to purchase an 8x10 of the photo that this came from? The owner of the car being restored is very willing to compensate you accordingly. This really is the best that I have seen so far, and a photo has better resolution than a digital scan of the same photo. Thanks, Steve
