I am thinking that I might prefer the tail panel painted matt black. Sort of a challenge grill without the holes. Does anyone have this?

Yes, mine has matte black paint on the rear panel. I like it.

Usually I like contrast like that but I must admit that I've never liked the matte black paint on the back panel on the 400i.

Those who have it...is it paint? Or is it a decal?

The body color is pretty nice...the matte black tail panels went out with the 68 Camaro..or maybe the 69 Mach 1...or (you name it from the late 60s) :)

I read in some Ferrari lit. somewhere that the 365 gt/2+2, 400, and possibly the 400i/seriesI were matte black, switching over to body color for seriesII. I've consistently read that the 412 is the best looking variant of all(due to the color-keyed bumpers), so what gives? The 308, & 512 have body colored Kamm tails, I think the body color looks better. I really like the Boxer paint option on the 512's, bringing about a continuity of the front and rear bumpers with an upper/lower division. The 412's chin spoiler was swiched to a black from the previous body color of the 400i, maintaining the black rocker panels of the 400's, bringing forth the front-rear/upper-lower concept(provided the stainless rear exhaust section is painted black as well) but at a lower line. I've toyed with the idea of bringing that black line up to the mid-body crease--the same line as the Boxer--to blend the bumpers in with the lower half of my 400i/II. Any takers out there?

    My 2 penniesworth:

I don't really think it (the Boxer paint job) would work on the 400. It would be just too much!

A lot of people don't like the 412 for its raised trunk-line - I personally think it is OK, although the lovely lines are slightly spoiled.

My 400 is black, so the black bumpers are no problem at all, and anyway I like them in black on non-black cars.

    Cheers

    Hey Aidan;
I'd say that's $.10's worth. I just toyed with the idea, but like you say, it would be a little much!! These are sleepers, and sleepers they should remain! I've always liked the Maserati Q-ports for the same reason--fast!, but they don't 'scream' it. That raised tail comes in handy @150mph, a rear wing just wouldn't be fitting. I don't have a problem with the black bumpers either.

I actually like the black bumpers on the 365/400/400i and actually don't like the painted bumpers on the 412. I also don't like the 412's rasied trunkline...in fact, I'd go so far as to say that I hate it.

I do however, like the other 412 updates such as the interior, I like the orange numbers on the dials, I like the clear turn signals up front.

But I HATE HATE HATE the silly wheels they put on 412s and especially the ones for the ABS equipped cars. Gimmie no ABS and some proper Daytonas please. ;)

My dream? Manual transmission, black interiored car with 412 engine and interior updates, but with series II 400i everything else, no matte black on the tail, 15" wheels from a pre-TRX 400 and with 412 front turn signals. Oh and no drilled panels for side markers please. Wouldn't mind a factory sunroof either... but that's really pushing it isn't it?

    :) Hey, I can dream can't I?

Certain colours received black rear panels at the factory as standard, Bianco Polo Park (aka white) being one of them.

What is it with you guys and TRX tires??? I have a funny feeling that in just a few years mine will be the only TRX car around, and then I'll be paying EVEN MORE for tires...

I have to say that I like my TRX's,and there are compounds out there that will turn them into gumballs. I have to push the susp. really hard to get those tires to break, but what a beautifully modest understeer you experience when they do. With all the qv wheel talk or whatever, I've heard notta on tire profiles. I've always been under the impression that softer compounds are found on the lower profiles.
